JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Assistant Professor of English and Theatre is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position within the English Program in the School of Humanities at Penn State Harrisburg.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual who shares our commitment to teaching, research, and service. Areas of expertise sought include British literature and theatre. The successful candidate will contribute to our efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for students, foster robust, collaborative research, and engage in service activities supporting institutional goals.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Professor of English and Theatre include teaching, research, and service to the school, college, university, community, and profession.

Teaching:

Teaching responsibilities will be 2-3 for the first two years, followed by a 3-3 load.

Research/Scholarship/Creative Accomplishments:

Candidates are expected to have an active and promising research agenda in their field of expertise.

Tenure-track faculty in the School of Humanities are required to publish articles, book chapters, and/or books with major academic journals and presses, leading to a national reputation at the time of tenure.

Service:

The Assistant Professor of English and Theatre will participate in service activities that reflect a commitment to campus, university, and regional communities as well as national and international academic communities.

Qualifications:

To be considered for the Assistant Professor of English and Theatre, candidates should possess the following qualifications:

Education:

PhD in English or a closely associated field is required by July of 2025.

Expertise:

Applicants working in premodern critical race studies, disability studies, and gender and sexuality studies are particularly welcome. The successful candidate will be able to teach the required Shakespeare class for the English major as well as offerings across multiple periods of British literature, including medieval, early modern, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. This position includes an appointment in Theatre to support the theatre minor. The successful candidate may direct theatre productions in conjunction with teaching. This person will also serve as a collaborative faculty member in the School of Humanities and promote and develop programming as needed by the college.
