Process Safety Manager

How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW? The Process Safety Manager is responsible and accountable for driving the development and sustainability of the global hazard mitigation program. This manager owns the business objective to eliminate unplanned events associated with process upsets on new molecules and new processes as well as existing operations. He/she is responsible to apply the process safety management process for achieving the success of the process hazard mitigation through coordination with Engineering, Operations, HSE, R&D, product development and Product Management. He/she manages the process safety specialists to ensure the efficiency of the support provided and to help them to grow.

The role is to demonstrate leadership, initiative, solution implementation, process safety application, knowledge and skills in a fast paced and very dynamic environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and monitor the process risk management program and participate to its design;

  • Manage the overall program of PHA implementation and periodical or spot review;

  • Ensure that process safety is properly embedded in the early stages of a product and process development;

  • Periodically review with the team the lessons learned related to the efficiency of the process safety methodologies and tools like PHA;

  • Propose improvements to the process safety methodologies and standards used within ALAM;

  • Manage the workload of the team and assign Process Safety representatives to the projects and potential additional resources when needed, in accordance with the organization by molecules and the current competencies;

  • Manage the development of the specific process safety competencies within the team (identify the gaps, potential deepening, interests of each one, with the team approach mindset);

  • Manage the development of computer chemical dispersion modeling competencies if needed or related outsourcing;

  • Define and develop the process safety knowhow that ALAM is missing and manage the filling of the gaps;

  • Support and coach the specialists when needed;

  • Monitors the efficiency of the process risk management processes;

  • Synthesis the global efficiency of the process risk management processes through a Process Risk Management tracking table;

  • Works within AL Corporate entity and other affiliates to leverage improvements and learnings.

For her/his group of products as first contact and when assigned for his/her secondary groups of products:

  • Works with the stage gate process in new project development to ensure analyses are complete and requirements are me;

  • Form effective partnerships with other organizations and functions to align on shared strategies and goals of the process risk management program;

  • Leads the elaboration of the annual process risk management plan;

  • Leads the process risk assessment needed for the projects, and proposes ways to improve process safety when deemed necessary;

  • Ensure that the selected process risk reduction measures meet the criteria of effectiveness (theoretically and when applied);

  • Makes decisions with a view towards what is best for Air Liquide Advanced Materials while seeking solution oriented outcomes;

  • Implement the Annual Process Risk management plan;

  • Works to leverage improvements and learnings;

  • Makes data based decisions, with methodical analysis;

  • Supports the activities in the implementation of the validated risk reduction measures;

  • Takes action to resolve gaps between performance and assessments;

  • Supports MOC preparation and reviews MOCs as a subject matter expert;

  • Performs reviews in the field to confirm the efficiency of the validated risk reduction measures and the application and efficiency of the assessment methods;

  • Leads or participates in root cause analysis (RCA) related to process safety risks, in close relation with the site HSES manager, and participates in the validation of the corrective actions;

  • Develop a process safety culture and system within ALAM, in coordination with the process safety team, and by influencing operations management and engineering.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or advanced chemical engineering degree

  • 10+ years experience in Process Safety methodologies and tools like Loss Prevention, LOPA, HAZOP, PHA, F&EI

  • 8+ years experience with associated domestic and global regulations such as OSHA PSM, USEPA RMP, and KGS.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to multi-task

  • Self-starter with the ability to perform well under pressure and changing priorities

  • Ability to communicate concisely and effectively in written and verbal formats with stakeholders at multiple levels in the business.

  • Ability to work and travel globally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years' experience in operations

  • Experience working with highly hazardous chemicals; toxic, flammable, pyrophoric

  • Process engineering experience in chemical industry

  • Root cause investigation and analysis skills

  • Deep knowledge of international fire and building codes

  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification or equivalent knowledge

  • Statistical Process Control, Statistical Quality Control experience

  • Able to learn technical chemical processes quickly in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Experience working in dynamic environments of short time to market and high customer expectations.

  • Experience working in an empowered organization.
