Department Information

Within this setting, the Communication Arts faculty promote thecritical analysis, evaluation, performance, and practice of human communication in its various contexts. Theatre majors are involved in the full production experience with opportunities in acting, design, dramaturgy, theatre-focused research and criticism, production management, technology, musical theatre, and video production. Georgia Southern University's Theatre program is an Institutional member of The National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).

Job Summary

Reporting to the Chair of the Communication Arts Department, the Assistant Professor of Theatre requires teaching courses and scholarship in scenic and lighting design, stage construction techniques, and other design/technology courses, in addition to supporting the Program's offerings of THEA 1100: Theatre Appreciation, which is part of the University's Core IMPACTS offerings. To support the production season, which serves as a high-impact educational laboratory intensive for students, this faculty line is responsible for designing or mentoring student designers in the scenic, lighting, and sound designs for the Program's production season. The position is an academic (10 month), tenure-track appointment.

Required Qualifications

Earned terminal degree (Master of Fine Arts or PhD) in Theatre Production Design, or a closely related field, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Theatre by July 15, 2025.

Ability to teach Stagecraft, Scene Design, Lighting Design and Theatre Appreciation

Demonstrated experience in Scene and Lighting Design

Ability to contribute construction support in the scene shop as necessary

Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.

Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.

Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching online

Ability to serve as master electrician as needed

Experience in theatrical sound design

Proposed Salary

Commensurate with experience.
This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
