Under the direct supervision of the pharmacist, performs functions pertaining to the dispensing of chemotherapy, bio therapy, hazardous and other medications. This technician shall be proficient in sterile products preparation, proficient and able to perform practices dictated by the USP 797/800 guidelines. Provides coverage in areas of need in the pharmacy operation. The incumbent is expected to provide optimal patient care by recognizing differences in drug therapy (i.e drug, dose & frequency) in pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Intra-departmental activities, such as inventory ordering and billing procedures, can be done without the direct supervision of the pharmacist. Under the direction of Pharmacy Management and the pharmacist this position will maintain adequate supply and utilize cost-containment practices. Incumbent is challenged to assist the pharmacist in the timely and accurate distribution of medications. Questions involving medication use or therapeutics must be referred to the pharmacist and good judgment is required when other types of information is provided by the technician. Appropriately operates and maintains specialized pharmacy equipment. Charts all scheduled maintenance designed to ensure sterility according to protocol. Performs daily, weekly, monthly and terminal cleaning of IV admixture spaces. The incumbent is challenged to assist in the training of new technicians. The incumbent will be required to work varying shifts and days to meet the needs of the department which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (Cost Center 200 only). Overtime may be required. The incumbent is expected to attend on a regular basis staff meetings, technician meetings, etc. In addition to being competent to work in the inpatient & outpatient environments, incumbent is expected to be trained and have the ability to work in multiple areas. This position fills inpatient/outpatient medication orders and must maintain general pharmacy knowledge, knowledge of medications, medication dosage forms, and trade and generic names. Thorough knowledge in preparation of sterile parenteral products using proper aseptic technique, knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations, proper product labeling, and product reconstitution procedures. Thorough understanding of medication order procedures involving the pharmacy computer system. Demonstrates interpersonal skills to maintain effective communication with co-workers, other hospital employees, patients and visitors. Working knowledge of Renown Health and specific departmental policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws regarding pharmacy. The incumbent may perform other duties as assigned. This position does not provide patient care.
