The Supervisor Spiritual Care is responsible for the direction of all Spiritual Care activities at Lawrence & Memorial and Westerly Hospitals and plans, develops, implements and evaluates the spiritual care programs in accordance with high quality professional chaplaincy practice.

A leader in the hospital, health system and local community, this role is responsible for the overall management, leadership, coordination, and evaluation of the department's spiritual educational programs, the Supervisor manages assigned staff in addition to serving as Spiritual Care representative providing direct emotional, spiritual, religious, and existential support for all patients, their loved ones, and staff - for those who are religious and those who are not.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Leadership Responsibilities:
    • 1.1. Manage direct reports assuring compliance with hospital standards and policies; hiring and on-boarding new direct reports; providing supervision and discipline as necessary,
    • 1.2. Facilitates departmental goal setting and evaluation of outcomes to ensure a continuous quality program of spiritual care.
    • 1.3. Provides strategic administrative oversight of all fiscal resources.
    • 1.4. Meets performance expectations for Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, and Staff and Self Development as outlined in performance review.
  • 2. Provides patients, family members and staff with emotional/spiritual support with respect to psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs. Provides spiritual support during Palliative/End of Life/Hospice patient care.
  • 3. Performs or arranges for religious functions in meeting the spiritual needs of patients and/or staff members.
  • 4. Provides oversight of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). If qualified as an ACPE (Associate) Supervisor, conducts the CPE program in accordance with ACPE standards.
    • 4.1. Coordinates the work of the Chaplain Advisory Committee in fund raising and program design.
  • 5. Acts as a liaison with religious leaders in the region to ensure a continuity of patient care and collaborative relationship with the community of faith.
  • 6. Assists in the development of Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) Spiritual Care policies and procedures. Responsible for communication and implementation of policies with local leadership at their assigned delivery network(s).
  • 7. Leads and supports activities that enhance the patient experience. Maintains active membership on the hospital's Ethics Committee.
  • 8. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times during communication and interactions.
  • 9. Performs other duties as directed to ensure smooth operation of the department.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Master of Divinity (M.Div.), Master of Arts in Theology (MA-Theology) or equivalent from accredited theological seminary. Emphasis in pastoral ministry or pastoral counseling is preferred.
Minimum Of 4 Units of accredited Clinical Pastoral Education

EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of pastoral experience, including work in a secular institution within a multi-faith framework and where relationship with patients and their families is an on-going activity.
At least one year leadership experience in a hospital chaplaincy setting (beyond student internship/residency) preferred.

LICENSURE:
Required to be Ordained, licensed, or otherwise designated Minsterial status by recognized religious body and endorsed by appropriate religious authority, with current ecclesiastical endorsement and active standing in their faith group.
Within one (1) year of hire must obtain Board of Chaplaincy Certification (BCC), NACC or other nationally recognized chaplain certification authority whose standards are in consonance with those of APC/NACC (Provisional certification lacking required experience acceptable.) Certification by ACPE as CPE (Associate) Supervisor a plus.

SPECIAL_SKILLS:
Demonstrated emotional and spiritual maturity sufficient to work in a crisis setting and demonstrated skills in pastoral care in an institutional setting.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
Computer literate in broad range of application programs including Microsoft Office Suite.

ACCOUNTABILITY:
Position is accountable to both System Spiritual Care function and local Delivery Network leadership.
Incumbent is held accountable for developing and carrying out spiritual programs designed to administer to the needs of the sick and their families, participating in interdisciplinary healthcare teams and providing spiritual support to staff; carrying out continuing education and increasing professional knowledge and skills, particularly in the area of sensitivity to the needs of those who are suffering illness, crisis or loss. A higher standard is expected of a nationally board-certified chaplain.

COMPLEXITY:
Position requires the independent exercise of discretion and judgment in developing and carrying out a wide variety of religious activities, both faith specific and interfaith, for ministering to the sick, their families, their caregivers and meeting crisis situations with a high degree of professional integrity and understanding.
