SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This entry level 'Associate Engineer - Catenary Design' role will be part of the Capital Delivery Department with a focus on Electric Traction Engineering Design projects throughout the Northeast Corridor. Emphasis will be on the Catenary System Infrastructure renewal and replacement.

Assists experienced structural engineers in developing studies, plans, specifications, calculations, performance assessments, integrated systems analysis, cost estimates, budgets, associated with the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of Amtrak's Electrification Infrastructure. Provides analytical support to the department, as it relates to the railroad Transmission network and Overhead Catenary System.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



  • Assists in reviews of engineering designs prepared by outside consultants for projects to be constructed on Amtrak property to ensure compliance with industry and Amtrak standards
  • Assists experienced engineers in planning, design/construction, scheduling, and cost estimation of large-scale electrification projects
  • Assists in structural analysis of electrification infrastructure
  • Assists in construction and field-related decision making
  • Assists in asset management and State of Good Repair program
  • Assists Operations and Quality teams as needed
  • Assists in establishment of Transmission and Catenary design standards
  • Assists in drafting of railroad as-built conditions
  • Evaluates effectiveness of current technical systems and processes



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Knowledge of engineering designs, principles, and practices
  • Zero to two years of professional engineering experience



MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:



  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex systems.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory
  • Organized, self-starter, motivated individual
  • Excellent team player; strong communications and interpersonal skills
  • Must have proven leadership experience
  • Must be computer literate and capable of writing computer programs or spreadsheet programs to streamline design time efficiency



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Demonstrated interest or competency in the railroad industry
  • Previous industry experience (internships, co-op, professional)
  • Demonstrated experience in Structural Steel and Concrete design/construction
  • Demonstrated experience in Drafting tools, such as AutoCAD
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) Certification



WORK ENVRIORNMENT:



  • Position may be required to work extended hours, including limited night and weekend activities.
  • Limited travel to various points on the Amtrak System (Boston to Wash DC)
  • Occasional exposure to elements in the field



COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The salary/hourly range is $72,000-$93,312. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
