*2024 Salary information is included with this posting. An increase of 3.5% over 2024 base wages is effective 1/1/2025.

The City of Renton is seeking an experienced Recreation Manager to oversee and coordinate the work of the Recreation division, including creating short- and long-term plans, developing and monitoring the division budget, and supervising staff. Coach and mentor employees to enhance their skills and growth; acknowledge and encourage their developmental progress and achievements. Build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams and external partners.

The Recreation Manager will be a strategic and innovative leader with a proven ability to guide and empower teams, foster collaboration, and achieve departmental goals. They will excel in managing community centers, aquatics facilities, and year-round programs, ensuring high-quality services that meet the needs of a diverse community. With strong business acumen and a commitment to equity and inclusion, they will develop forward-thinking strategies, optimize resources, and build meaningful relationships with stakeholders to promote participation and community connection. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage recreation building operations, programs, events, and activities in the Parks & Recreation department.
  • Foster the development of community collaborations, partnerships, program sponsors, and leverage civic engagement opportunities to provide enhanced service value of City programs.
  • Write and complete grant applications for special funding of programs and activities; confer with governmental agencies regarding various grant programs.
  • Prepare or direct the preparation of a variety of records and reports related to recreation including budgets, grants, participation and safety.
  • Provide leadership and support staff to inter-departmental Special Event Committee.
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop marketing strategies for division programs to maximize exposure and resources, promote opportunities, and recognize sponsor/partner/volunteer efforts.
  • Evaluate and select contractors, consultants, and service providers; negotiate and enforce contracts and agreements for services according to established guidelines; assure that contracted services are provided efficiently and effectively.
  • Serve as the City's representative to committees and organizations; meet with public and private organizations, agencies, and contractors regarding special event, sponsorship and partnership opportunities.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of web pages to support division efforts; research emerging technologies and trends that may enhance the goals and work plans of the division and work to integrate these technologies into the operations.
  • Provide opportunities for professional development to staff.
  • Evaluate employee performance; conduct consistent staff and 1:1 check in meetings with direct reports.
  • Delegate, review and ensure timely completion of duties of assigned staff.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of department goals that support the City's Mission and Business Plan.
  • Train staff; set specific and measurable standards and goals.
  • Evaluate recreation operations to improve service, productivity, and efficiency, and resolve work-related complaints and issues that cannot be addressed by staff.
  • Ensure assigned staff regularly evaluate and recognize staff.
  • Initiate hiring process and coordinate the onboarding and training of new employees.
  • Prepare budgets, monitor, and approve expenditures and capital purchases, submit periodic budget updates, and monitor assigned performance measures.
  • Assist in the development and updating of City policies, ensure proper interpretation and administration of policies by staff.
  • Create an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by welcoming and meeting the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Use progressive discipline when appropriate with guidance from a Director/Administrator.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support city priorities during emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Recreation Management, Community or Public Health, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation program management or related field.
  • Or minimum 9 years of relevant education and experience.
  • 2 years' supervisory experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Successful passing of a required background check and driving record check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 30 pounds on occasion.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in an office environment (and outdoors in all weather conditions occasionally).
  • Noise level in the office is moderately quiet (and in the field is moderately loud).
  • Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
  • Night meetings may be required.

Telework Program: The City of Renton supports workers performing in a hybrid capacity (partial telework/in-office) where job responsibilities can be performed remotely. This position may be eligible for a telework arrangement, up to 2 days remote, based on the operational needs of the City and specific Department. Regardless of job title or telework arrangement, City of Renton employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
