Overview

Manage company underwriting policies, practices, procedures, and delegated authority. Responsible for premium and expense planning, underwriting pricing reviews, and performance analysis that provide for profitability and retention of business consistent with departmental, regional, and corporate objectives. May manage premium audit function.


Responsibilities

  • Ensures department's compliance with company's underwriting philosophy and procedures.
  • Works with Field Operations Manager to prepare premium plan budget. Evaluates market conditions, line of business and segment profitability, retention, rate, diversification, and market planning to ensure profitable growth. Provides analysis of all premium plan budget variances. Identifies and implements needed actions.
  • Prepares expense plan budget for department and monitors and controls department's expenses. Provides analysis of all expense plan budget variances. Identifies and implements needed actions.
  • Participates with senior management in annual meetings, producer council meetings and internal conferences.
  • Evaluates and gives guidance to staff on an ongoing basis as to their abilities and duties and makes personnel recommendations to insure proper and optimum use of personnel. Ensures continuous professional development of staff. Evaluates personnel for underwriting authority and insures they are in compliance with those authority levels.
  • Maintains administrative records for management staff which includes performance and salary reviews, attendance and various production figures within the department.
  • Works in collaboration with Director of Field Underwriting, Field Operations Manager, Actuarial & SBUs on all pricing reviews to ensure growth and profitability.
  • Manages and directs underwriting actions to meet Decision Support goals. Communicates results to regional management team and staff. Develops strategies to assist region in meeting the objectives.
  • Conducts agency visits as required by company standards. Must be able to drive an automobile to travel within territory. Car travel represents approximately 15% of employee's time.
  • Establishes procedures and controls to ensure accomplishment of service standards. Mediates and resolves insurance department, agents, and consumer complaints.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

  • Requires a strong analytical and financial acumen along with superior leadership skills.
  • Travel 15% and must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.
  • College degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of recent insurer or commercial underwriting, or agency management experience.
  • 5+ years of supervisory/management experience.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
Pay Range

USD $149,000.00 - USD $214,000.00 /Yr.
