Organizational Unit Overview |
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. |
Job Duties |
This position is located in the School of Dental Medicine at Ross Hall and is involved in the following functions: electronically submitting complex insurance claims that require attachments thru specialized software, or manually via online insurance portals such as NC Tracks for Medicaid; gathering all needed information from the Electronic Health Record to prepare and submit insurance pre-authorizations thru specialized software; tracking and entering pre-authorization results into the billing and treatment records; monitoring expiring pre-authorization and requesting extensions or new authorizations when needed; notifying providers of pre- authorization results; conducting specialized training for incoming dental students and training new/existing staff on specialized software (e.g.
NEA Fast Attach).
This individual will review remittance advice documents and EOBs to ensure proper processing and payment of claims. Correcting all data errors, resubmitting or appealing unprocessed or returned claims. Analyzing patterns of difficulty in either submission or approval and suggesting corrective measures to improve processes and results.
This individual must be knowledgeable regarding all areas of dental patient accounts including claims, insurance processing, payment processing, write-offs, and adjustments. This position must communicate effectively with clients, faculty, insurance company representatives and staff. This position will serve as a back-up for patient phone calls and payments.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the
UNC Optional Retirement Program (
