The Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria seeks a full-time board-certified/board-eligible internal medicine or medicine-pediatrics physician to assume a leadership role within the department. The position of Assistant Associate/Professor of Clinical Medicine will direct both care and instruction at the Positive Health Solutions (PHS) clinic as a clinician and educator.

PHS is the leader in Central Illinois providing comprehensive medical and case management services for persons who are living with HIV/AIDS and providing primary medical care for the LGBTQ+ community.

This position will be responsible for the overall clinical supervision and management of PHS patients, the maintenance and improvement of medical systems to deliver quality health care, the coordination of the educational and clinical experience of medical students and residents assigned to the clinic, providing comprehensive care for the patients, and assisting with grant writing to secure funding.

Physicians with experience working with the HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ communities and who are comfortable with PrEP counseling and training are preferred. Also preferred are candidates with experience as an ambulatory clinic medical director. The position requires a medical doctorate (MD or DO) or foreign equivalent. Candidate must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Medicine-Pediatrics, current or eligible for licensure in Illinois, and current or eligible for medical staff appointment at a university-affiliated hospital. The position is available to applicants with administrative and teaching experience. H-1B and J1 visa candidates are welcome to apply.

Position Summary

The candidate will provide clinical patient care in the outpatient clinic at Positive Health Solutions (PHS) and assist the department in teaching medical students, residents and fellows in Internal Medicine.

Duties & Responsibilities

Administrative
  • Provide medical direction and administration to ensure adequate and qualified medical staff for clinical service and coverage needs
  • Provide oversight and review of patient visit coding to ensure accurate billing
  • Assists in the development and review of clinical protocols, emergency care procedures, and patient care policies
  • Supervise physicians, mid-levels, and nurses
  • Direct provider and medical care team meetings
  • Improve and expand the scope of services available with pharmacies, dental care facilities, and social support resources through community referrals
  • Work closely with the Behavioral Health Specialist to provide continuity of care
  • Provide clear written and verbal communications to patients and staff
  • Participate in various administrative/clinical staff meetings to include but not limited to Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, clinic meeting, general staff meeting, case conference/management, and/or administrative meetings as requested
  • Assist with planning to evaluate performance levels, quality of service, productivity, and future needs
  • Provide leadership and assist in efforts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of PHS while being a positive advocate toward the mission of PHS
  • Participate in public relations functions on behalf of PHS
  • Assist with grant writing to secure funding from external sources
  • Participate in the business and fiscal activities of the department
  • Other duties as assigned and appropriate to advance the mission of the Department of Medicine

Patient Care
  • Serve as general medicine attending physician of record or consultant for patients in the outpatient clinic at Positive Health Solutions (PHS)
  • Perform or supervise the performance of patient care services to include history/physical examinations and reports, clinic visit notes and evaluations, and similar services that are customarily performed in an outpatient general medicine clinic
  • Make referrals for secondary and tertiary care
  • Collaborate with other attending physicians and consultants
  • Participate in performance improvement projects
  • Participate in university committees
  • Perform duties in a manner that complies with all applicable standards, rules, policies, and regulations of the hospital, University of Illinois, Joint Commission, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations

Resident/Student Education

  • Supervise residents and medical students in the outpatient clinic
  • Complete resident and student evaluations as assigned by the program/department
  • Mentor resident physicians and medical students
  • Opportunity to participate in resident morning report on weekdays when patient care activities allow
  • Opportunity to participate in curriculum development with the Residency program

Research

  • Opportunities to perform clinical research are available to the incumbent.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with resident physicians and medical students on research projects are available to the incumbent.
  • Research productivity is not a requirement of this position but is strongly encouraged


Minimum Qualifications

  • MD/Do degree
  • Board certified or eligible in Internal Medicine or Medicine/Pediatrics
  • Eligible for licensure in Illinois
  • Eligible for medical staff appointment at university-affiliated teaching hospital

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with the HIV/AIDS patients preferred.
  • Experience providing care within LGBTQ communities preferred.
  • Experience providing PrEP counseling and training are preferred.
  • Ambulatory clinic medical director experience preferred.
