Job Summary:

Join the vibrant and highly skilled Capital Project Delivery team responsible for managing all of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's medium to large capital planning, design, and construction, projects with project values of $600,000 and up. Our current workload is at $2B and growing.

Capital Project Delivery delivers exceptional customer service to UW Madison's Schools, Colleges, and Divisions to help them imagine, plan, develop, build, renovate, or replace their academic, research, and other collegiate facilities. In this job it helps to be a problem solver, know project management principles, and be able to apply or develop project processes.

A successful Architect/Engineer Manager candidate will have a blended set of skills in staff management, technical project management, problem solving, and interpersonal intelligence. In this job you will oversee project managers by guiding them through multiple internal and external project processes, advise on project issues, foster staff growth, accountability and engagement, and seek to match project assignments with abilities and interests. The position also involves developing project requests and charters, resolving project conflicts, reviewing and approving project administrative documents, strategizing the path and timing of future projects, assigning projects, reporting project information to FPM leadership, coordinating with other managers, meeting with campus stakeholders to develop project requests and owner project requirements and, ensuring projects follow campus and regulatory rules and policies.

You will oversee Project Managers that have the responsibility of ensuring projects meet the customer's needs by skillfully navigating the wide array of tasks and responsibilities and bringing projects within scope, on schedule and in budget. We deliver projects using a team comprised of Architect/Engineer (A/E) consultants and general contractors (GC) selected through state mandated processes. A/E consultants then provide full design and construction administration services. Contractors perform all their own construction project management including coordination of MEP and other sub-contractors. Capital Project Delivery coordinates the A/E and GC work with campus and outside stakeholders to ensure design and construction conform to UW standards and meet the customer needs. Responsibilities:
Works with senior management to establish a portfolio that increases business value, builds synergies among projects, makes the best use of limited resources, and aligns projects with the defined strategic direction and goals. Identifies and manages risks, monitors and controls portfolio budgets, effectively manages relationships, and establishes project reporting requirements.

  • 15% Monitors lifecycles for a varied portfolio of projects, tracks progress, identifies risks, recommends improvements, and collaborates to implement changes
  • 15% Assists in the development of strategic planning initiatives and unit objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources, in alignment with the strategic plan
  • 5% Manages and evaluates portfolio budget and objectives in collaboration with key stakeholders and leadership
  • 5% Prepares and disseminates portfolio reports according to established policies and procedures
  • 20% Develops, implements, and directs operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives and facilitates project requests
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 10% Mentors, leads, and guides project managers, field representatives, and project coordinators with the execution of their project duties. Aid them in resolving issues and looking ahead to mitigate project risks.
  • 5% Fosters partnerships with campus customers and stakeholders by engaging through regular check-ins to understand objectives, expectations, and challenges. Resolves issues promptly and adjusts project scope or timeline to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • 5% Guides and works with campus customers to develop project initiation documents, including project charters, AE requests, project requests, budget documents, and other such materials as needed.

Qualifications:

Required:
- At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or architectural design and construction project management
- Experience managing building and infrastructure design projects from inception through construction and closeout
- Experience in capital project design process, including: site planning & coordination, utilities and MEP involvement, air/water/thermal barriers, coordinating design and construction, overseeing architectural and engineering consulting services, and development of design details
- Experience developing owner project requirements, project and construction cost estimates, charters, AE request for services, and schedules
- Committed to creating an inclusive work environment
- Dedicated to providing excellent customer service
- Ability to coach, encourage, and foster skill development across a team of professionals

The starting salary for the position is $115,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
