Summary:

UNC's Department of Pharmacy is an organization of more than 300 dedicated employees with focused attention on caring for patients of the UNC Health Care system. Research is a core mission for UNC Health and Investigational Drug Services (IDS) is at the epicenter of cutting-edge trials. IDS manages the distributional operations and billing of over 500 trials. There is a full-service Cancer Investigational Drug Services team onsite at UNC Medical Center located at the North Carolina Cancer Hospital (NCCH) that prepares and dispenses investigational therapies for patients being treated at UNC Health. These therapies are administered at the Medical Center or other other system locations.

Position Summary:

The team is seeking a highly motivated pharmacist to work in the Cancer IDS Pharmacy providing high-level customer service to patients at UNC Health Care. The focus of this position is to evaluate and implement clinical trial protocols and optimize drug distribution services for investigational drugs undergoing clinical trials within the UNC Medical Center and Health System Clinics. Vestigo is the research computer system utilized for studies and this pharmacist will be required to become proficient in using this system for inventory and labeling of the products dispensed. This individual will also be responsible for providing experiential instruction to Doctor of Pharmacy Students and UNC Medical Center pharmacy residents as able.

Responsibilities:

  1. Read, evaluate, verify, and implement clinical trial protocols in the dispensing and administration of investigational drugs and respond to questions from study teams and sponsors.
  2. Serve as the primary pharmacist for research protocols as assigned, point-of-contact for IDS-related study issues, and IDS liaison in research teams (i.e., particularly research coordinators) for assigned protocols.
  3. Revise protocols as required by amendments or study updates and communicate with study teams regarding protocol.
  4. Oversee the preparation, dispensing, and storage of medications including investigational drugs and placebo using standard formulas, processes, and procedures as required.
  5. Complete required documentation such as notations in the medical record and protocol documentation.
  6. Manage inventory, monitor storage and temperature conditions, maintain accountability and data records through Vestigo, and monitor visits and audits, as needed.
  7. Counsel patients and appropriate family members regarding pharmaceutical care issues as requested or required.
  8. Direct workflow of the shift and supervise pharmacy technicians, students, and/or volunteers present during that shift. Train IDS staff and ancillary pharmacy staff as needed on new protocols. Precept pharmacy students and/or residents as required.
  9. Adhere to federal, state, local and institutional policies, procedures, standards and regulations.
  10. Identify and participate in process improvement opportunities.

* PharmD or BS Pharmacy Degree
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or obtainable before initiation of employment. Recent graduates of ACPE-accredited colleges/schools of pharmacy may fill this role while pending initial pharmacist licensure, but are subject to limitations mandated by the NC Board of Pharmacy and must obtain licensure within 6 months of orientation or sooner if required for operations.
