Job Summary:

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is seeking a highly motivated Research Analyst for the Pathogen Sequencing subunit within the Genomics Services Unit. This research service unit specializes in sequencing pathogens for clients at UW-Madison and external clients. Some pathogens include strains of SIV, HIV, Zika, and SARS-CoV-2, as well as other viruses. Under the direction of Dr Shelby O'Connor, the successful applicant will assist in the analysis and interpretation of collected data and drafts reports to develop and communicate research findings to clients.


Responsibilities:
Assists with the analysis and interpretation of collected data and drafts reports to develop and communicate research findings.

  • 25% Analyzes data and summarizes research results for a defined research area or study by utilizing established processes
  • 20% Prepares reports and manuscripts and assists with the development and presentation of materials through various communication platforms
  • 25% Maintains organization of research records and responds to data requests and inquiries
  • 10% Serves as an initial point of contact for individuals and groups providing basic information about result analysis and methodologies, answers questions as needed
  • 20% Conducts research experiments. Collects data and monitors test results

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in biological sciences or bioinformatics required


Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
*At least one year of experience working with genomic deep sequencing data sets in a research laboratory
*Must have experience working with Illumina and/or Oxford Nanopore sequencing technologies and analysis of sequence data
*Excellent written and verbal scientific communication skills
*Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate with other researchers and staff
*Strong organization and prioritization skills
*Demonstrated complex problem-solving skills
*Experience working with Nextflow, Snakemake, or similar orchestration systems

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
*Experience in an academic research laboratory strongly preferred
*Understanding of laboratory data management systems such as LabKey Server highly desirable
*Experience using Git or other version control software
*Experience working with biological materials, in particular nonhuman primate materials
*Familiarity with report, manuscript, and/or protocol preparation strongly preferred
*Familiarity working with the UW Center for High Throughput Computing

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

The salary for this position will be determined based on experience and qualifications. The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. The WNPRC's mission is to increase the understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. To accomplish this, the WNPRC helps discover treatments, preventions and cures for human disease; generates new knowledge of primate biology, from the molecular and whole animal levels to the understanding of primate ecosystems; facilitates research progress by providing expertise, resources and training to scientists worldwide; and collects primate information and disseminates to the research community and to the public.
