POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides patients and families orientation to Child Life Services and developmentally appropriate play at the bedside, play room, and clinic areas. Works closely with Child Life staff to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the play and activity program for children. Supervises the work of volunteers.

Shift: Please note this is a 20 hour per week position

Education: Two years of college level course work or an Associate's degree in Child Development, Human Development, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, or related field, and some experience in a Child Life program.

Knowledge: Knowledge of child development and teaching methods as acquired through an A.A. program.

-Some knowledge of medical terminology and its implications at a level generally acquired through three to six months on-the-job training.

Skills: Ability to plan play and activity program with consultation from child life staff based on psychosocial and developmental need of patients.

-Ability to comprehend and transmit detailed instructions and information related to patient treatment.

-Ability to provide constant supervision to patients and families, determining their needs, monitoring their behavior and providing the necessary support up to eighty percent of work day.

-Some documentation and written communication skills, usually acquired through three to six months on-the-job training.

-Effective verbal communication skills.

-Basic supervisory skills used to direct volunteers.

-Multi-cultural skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and staff.

-Time management and organizational skills.

Required Licensure, Certification, Etc.: None required.

Work Experience: Nine month's experience with children in school or day care setting; some experience (volunteer or paid) in hospital child life setting
