Who You'll Work With
You'll join a group of publishing professionals within the Global Publishing team, which focuses on supporting authors to develop powerful editorial products that will make an impact on our many audiences. You'll work with highly skilled McKinsey colleagues - typically senior consultants and industry/functional experts - from around the world to develop and publish distinctive content across digital and print platforms. As a data visualization editor, you'll become fluent in McKinsey's production-related processes and resources, with strong editing, fact-checking, and content management support to build publishing efforts.
You will have a close working relationship to McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), a tight-knit global team, collaborating with researchers, editors, production, and communications leads. Together with the Global Publishing team, you will ensure that the visual content and user experiences published by McKinsey are best in class, delivering highest value content in the most engaging way as part of our cohesive brand experience.
MGI is the business and economics research arm of McKinsey & Co. The Institute publishes a range of reports and articles. Its mission is to provide leaders in the commercial, public, and social sectors with the facts and insights on which to base management and policy decisions. Focus themes include productivity and growth, natural resources, human capital, globalization, and technologies and markets of the future.
Your impact within our firm
You will act as a thought partner and service provider, working with McKinsey authors to develop data visualization-driven exhibits for public-facing articles and reports.
In collaboration with authors and other stakeholders, you'll shape content (e.g., charts, explanatory diagrams) into a range of editorial products (e.g., static and interactive charts, visual information designs). You will review and edit content that rigorously follows conventions of explanatory data visualization and written English, ensuring accuracy of data, consistency of voice/tone/style and alignment with firm style, visual identity, and risk/reputation guidelines, working with authors to discuss and develop changes.
You will work on editorial publications, coordinating with relevant McKinsey publishing groups and stakeholders, to ensure projects are completed, approved, and published to deadline. You will lead projects/workstreams independently or with designated team, aligning with key stakeholders, advancing relevant goals for publishing. You will stay up to date on advancements in data visualization, business news and trends, as well as the firm's research, to ensure communications are in touch with current public discussion/research and aligned with the firm's position and drive engagement across platforms. You may be asked to engage in additional ad hoc editorial projects.
Your qualifications and skills
  • Bachelor's/University degree or equivalent required
  • 5+ years of experience in data visualization and information design, including digital publishing, preferably for an English-language journalism publication or professional-services firm
  • Strong data literacy and detailed knowledge of data visualization publishing practices, along with understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
  • Mastery of Adobe Illustrator; proficiency with online interactive data visualization publishing software (e.g., Flourish); proficiency with data management software (e.g., Excel); and working familiarity other visual editing software (e.g., Figma, Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Comfort level with data viz code development environments is a plus (e.g., collaborating with web developers; experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint) and team share tools (e.g., Box, Slack, Zoom)
  • Proficiency and fluency in verbal and written English is required, other language skills are a plus
  • Strong editorial skills (e.g., writing, editing), judgment, with ability to rapidly absorb complex ideas and distill them into accessible exhibits for global audiences
  • Broad and deep understanding of current events and trends in economics, business, policy, and technology
  • Familiarity with audience engagement (e.g., social media)
  • Strong communication skills (oral, written, presentation)
  • Experience interacting with senior staff and subject matter experts and ability to achieve consensus across such stakeholders
  • Problem-solving skills; ability to constructively challenge client service content based on knowledge of best practices in data visualization
  • Strong organization skills and project management skills (e.g., the ability to meet short- and long-term deadlines, handle multiple projects simultaneously, steer an effort through to completion)
  • Ability to work independently in a low-structure environment and to deal with ambiguity; understanding of when to proactively seek guidance, and willingness to do so

For new joiners for this role in Canada and/or the United States, including all office locations where the job may be performed, a reasonable estimated range is $118,900 - $176,800 in USD and $125,600 - $157,000 in CAD - to help you understand what you can expect. This reflects our best estimate of the lowest to highest salary for this role at the time of this posting, ensuring you have a clear picture right from the start, though it's important to remember that actual salaries may vary. Factors like your office location, your unique blend of experience and skills, start date and our current organizational needs all play a part in determining the final figure. Certain roles are also eligible for bonuses, subject to McKinsey's discretion and based on factors such as individual and/or organizational performance.
