THE POSITION

Are you a religious leader who believes that every individual has the potential to choose a path of transformation and renewal? The Department of Corrections, State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Rockview is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Chaplain to join our religious services department. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting a comprehensive, interfaith religious services program, serving inmates of all faiths and those with no religious affiliation. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will serve as an interfaith chaplain, responsible for planning and leading faith-specific religious services for inmates who share your broad spiritual tradition. You will also administer sacraments, rites, and ceremonies such as baptism, communion, and the sacrament of the sick ensuring appropriate accommodation for inmates of all faiths. Your duties will include conducting spiritual counseling, grief support, and other special counseling services, as well as making regular visits to both general population and specialized housing units. You will also provide non-routine visits to inmates who are critically ill or nearing the end of life, including those in community hospitals. As part of your responsibilities, you will assist in overseeing religious activities, including facilitating structured spiritual discussion groups for inmates identified as severely mentally ill. Additionally, you will help coordinate the involvement of inmate volunteers in religious services and other program areas to further support the spiritual needs of the incarcerated population.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Thursday, and 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $58,035.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of professional pastoral experience and a bachelor's degree; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes one year of professional pastoral experience.

Special Requirements:

  • All candidates are required, at the time of application, to provide documentation from an officially sanctioned faith group dated within one year of the application date stating they are officially sanctioned or authorized to conduct worship/sacred services, and specifying which sacraments, rites, ceremonies, or rituals they are authorized to perform as a religious leader.
  • All employees in the Department of Corrections must complete the Correctional Chaplains Training Course within six months of hire.
  • All employees in the Department of Corrections must maintain their credentials with an officially sanctioned faith group on an annual basis for the duration of employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
