Surgical Technologist III / First Assist

Participates in the delivery of individualized peri-operative nursing care under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician or a registered professional nurse. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to assure quality patient care.

• Participates in the nursing process for patients of all ages served.
• Contributes to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities and demonstrates support of service area/facility/organization initiatives.
• Participates in unit educational activities.
• Performs first assistant responsibilities in accordance with the state scope of practice requirements. Exercises critical thinking skills in all aspects of the FA role.
• Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient's rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
• Works as a professional colleague with the physician and to enhance the effectiveness of patient care.
• Assists anesthesiologist when applicable.
• Provides technical first assistance to the primary surgeon in the operating room.
• Basic knowledge of instrumentations.
• Establish/Maintain sterile field and assure team maintains sterile environment.
• Demonstrates correct and safe instrumentation passing.
• Participants in surgical counts (sponge, needle and instruments), per policy
• Adheres to Policy and Procedures, all regulatory standards and Patient Safety Goals.

Education: High School graduate. Graduate of approved Surgical Technology Program. Completion/graduate of an approved Surgical First Assist Program required. Eligible to register as a Surgical Technologist with the VA Department of Health Professions required: Provide to the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor one of the two following documents: A current credential as a certified surgical technologist; or successful completion of a surgical technologist training program during the applicant's service as a member any branch of the armed forces of the United States.

Experience: Two years' experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist required.

Licensure/Certifications/Registration: Certified in Surgical Technology (CST) required. Surgical First Assist certification (SFA) required. AHA-BLS-HCP certification from the American Heart Association is required

Other Minimum Qualifications: Satisfactory completion of structured orientation program.
