The Brody School of Medicine ( BSOM) at East Carolina University ( ECU) is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina through excellence in medical education, patient care, and research. Job Duties
This is an "Internal Posting" to hire 4 House Deans, open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine. Each position will be part-time (up to .40 FTE/up to 40%) reassignment of time for a Brody School of Medicine faculty member. It is anticipated that candidates will have variable full-time equivalent ( FTE) appointments based on their clinical responsibilities within the institution.
The House Deans at BSOM will serve as key leaders in this effort by developing and sustaining the medical school's new learning community model (The Houses). They will serve as the inspirational and motivational core of the four Houses of BSOM. The Houses will serve as a support structure for BSOM students to engage actively in the BSOM curriculum, to develop their professional and career identities, to strive for academic success, and to acquire a sense of belonging and community. Each of the four House Deans will provide individualized and group-based support to an assigned cohort of medical students (M1-M4), guiding them from matriculation through graduation. The House Deans will play a critical role in fostering student success by integrating career advising, mentorship, clinical skills development, professional identity formation, coaching, and personal wellness initiatives. The House Deans will lead the work of the faculty coaches that will be assigned to work with a smaller subsets of students in their House.

Key Responsibilities:
Learning Community Leadership (65%):

  • Work alongside the Associate Dean of Student Affairs -Foundational Sciences, and other House Deans in designing and implementing the learning community House System to best serve Brody's students and the Brody community.
  • Develop and oversee programs within the House that foster student engagement, professional identity formation, and well-being.
  • Promote leadership, service, and peer mentoring opportunities within the learning community.
  • Assist with recruitment, training, supporting, and assessing house faculty coaches, program coordinator, and student peer leaders.
  • Provide office hours and regularly schedule meetings with students assigned to their cohort, monthly meetings with coaches, and bi-monthly meetings with Associate Deans of Students Affairs.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development to develop a robust series of faculty development programming for the faculty coaches associated with the Houses.
  • Create a welcoming environment that promotes collaboration, teamwork, and mutual support among students.
  • Organize social and professional development events that strengthen relationships within and across Houses.
  • Encourage student involvement in extracurricular activities, community outreach, and service-learning initiatives.
  • Work closely with student leaders to enhance House traditions and maintain a strong sense of community.
  • Assess the effectiveness of advising and mentoring initiatives and implement improvements.
  • Identify resources and support systems to enhance student success and well-being.
  • Assist with development, implementation, and assessment of the longitudinal LC curriculum for Careers in Medicine and Professional Identity Formation, including but not limited to: professional development and wellness.
  • Collaborate with faculty coaches, appropriate course directors and the Office of Medical Education leadership to integrate clinical skills training and coaching into the House curricular structure.
  • Provide structured feedback on communication, professionalism, and clinical reasoning skills.


Student Advising and Mentorship (25%):

  • Serve as a primary advisor and mentor for an assigned cohort of medical students, providing guidance on academic concerns, professional, and personal development throughout their medical school journey.
  • Offer career advising and support for residency applications, including assisting in the preparation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) and reviewing components of ERAS (or subspecialty specific application system) for students in the individual House Dean's assigned cohort.
  • Provide guidance to students regarding the transition from the foundational years of medical school to clinical training.
  • Support students in navigating academic challenges and personal growth.

Collaboration and Liaison (10%):

  • Serve as a bridge between students and university resources, including Student Health, Counseling Services
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, administration, and other House Deans to enhance the student experience.
  • Serve on the Admissions Committee

Other duties may be specified by the BSOM Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Foundational Sciences.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • MD, DO, or MBBS from an appropriately accredited institution or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.
  • Current Brody School of Medicine faculty member at a rank of Clinical Assistant Professor/Assistant Professor or higher.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in medical education, student affairs, or a related area.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student development, mentoring, and support.


License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

  • Full, unencumbered license to practice medicine in North Carolina
  • Full schedule DEA Registration Certificate
  • Credentialing with ECU Physicians

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Prior experience or leadership role within medical education or student affairs
  • Familiarity with learning community models and their application in medical education.
  • Experience in career advising, mentoring, and student engagement initiatives.


License or Certification Required by the Department
