About the Caltech Design & Construction Department

The Design and Construction team takes great pride in serving Caltech by delivering the built environment required to support the needs of the institute. Our team of seasoned design and construction industry professionals sincerely value working closely with the campus to define project requirements and design and construct successful projects.

Our services cover the project life cycle, ranging from in-house planning and design, space management, project and construction management, construction inspection to specialized procurement expertise. Our goal is to provide Caltech with world-class design and construction services as we continually strive to provide exceptional support.

Essential Job Duties

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in the design of mechanical systems from conception through construction for small and large buildings projects including preparation of calculations, reports, and specifications.
  • With guidance from senior team member, perform fire suppression system selection and prepare designs involving the design of mechanical HVAC systems.
  • Conduct design drawing reviews of documents prepared by others.
  • Ensure design conforms with all applicable codes and Caltech standards.
  • Verify construction work is in compliance with Caltech standards and project requirements.
  • Willing and able to assist in surveys to evaluate existing building conditions.
  • Coordinating work with other disciplines and team members.
  • Responsible for interdisciplinary coordination and review.
  • Responsible for collaboration and communication with supervisors and team members.
  • Working under the supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member.
  • Work within a project team environment, interfacing and communicating with other design team members.
  • Perform building heating and cooling load calculations.
  • Analyze and select HVAC, Plumbing equipment.
  • Use computer software as a tool for solving basic engineering problems.
  • Prepare and develop reports, calculations, specifications, and designs in compliance with applicable code and standard requirements.
  • Support designs during construction including shop drawing review, information request-response, and punch list generation.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience.
  • NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering pass and completion.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in Construction.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE).
  • Relevant work experience in mechanical design for new, existing, and renovation Building Design.
  • Familiarity with HVAC specific software such as Trane Trace or Carrier HAP heating/cooling load calculation tools.
  • AutoCAD or Revit graphics software experience.
  • Bluebeam experience.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with high performance and sustainable building practices.

Hiring Range

$107,100 - $117,000 per year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
