Visiting Assistant Professor - Costume Design

About This Role

Kansas State University's Theatre Program is seeking an experienced and dedicated Visiting Costume Designer to join our faculty in a full-time, 9-month visiting position. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to our dynamic theatre program while fostering creativity, collaboration, and excellence in costume design. The Visiting Costume Designer will mentor students, collaborate with faculty and staff, and bring innovative costume design concepts to life for our productions.

Responsibilities:



  • Costume Design & Production: Design costumes, hair, and makeup for productions in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, overseeing and actively participating in the design process from concept through completion.





  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Collaborate with directors, designers, and production staff to realize artistic visions. Foster a collaborative and supportive environment that prioritizes student learning and professional best practices. Mentor and supervise students in costume design.





  • Teaching: Fall Semester: Teach a course in Costume Design, a half-semester Make-Up course, and a 2/3-week section of Costume Design in our Fundamentals of Theatrical Design course. Spring Semester: Teach a half-semester Make-Up course and a 2/3-week section of Costume Design in our Fundamentals of Theatrical Design course. There may also be an opportunity to teach a course in related areas, based on expertise and program needs.





  • Service & Engagement: Participate in departmental activities, production meetings, recruitment efforts, and student mentorship.

Worksite Option

This position is on-site, requiring work on employer premises or designated assignment locations. The candidate must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. as part of costume shop duties.


What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • A minimum of a Master of Fine Arts degree, with substantial professional experience in costume design


Preferred Qualifications



  • A minimum of a Master of Fine Arts degree, with substantial professional experience in costume design





  • A strong portfolio demonstrating professional, creative and varied costume designs.





  • Commitment to mentoring students and fostering a collaborative learning environment.





  • Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.





  • Experience in costume construction, fabric selection, and wardrobe management.





  • Teaching experience in a university or professional training setting.





  • Experience with historical research, period costuming and new technology in costume design.
