Ophthalmic Technician

Position Highlights:

  • Position: Ophthalmic Technician
  • Hourly Pay Range: $24.86 - $37.29. The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.
  • Location: Northwest Community Hospital - 880 W Central Rd. Arlington Heights, IL.
  • Full Time: 40 hours/week
  • Hours: Hours vary - Monday - Friday (8a - 4:30p)

What you will do:

Certified Ophthalmic Assistants work under the supervision and direction of an ophthalmologist to perform ophthalmic clinical studies. They are trained to measure visual acuity, instill ocular medications; obtain ocular, medical and family histories, perform refractometry, instructing patients regarding medications, tests and procedures, coordinate patient flow, measure intraocular pressure, participate in telephone triage, perform pupil assessment, perform eye muscle assessment and perform confrontational visual fields.

  • Schedule patients for surgery and in office appointment follow up; obtain necessary precertification.
  • Interview patients and document ocular and medical histories.
  • Prepare and position patient for diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Perform a variety of routine tests using ophthalmic instruments that provide diagnostic information including, but not limited to, intraocular pressures, basic motility, visual fields, PAM and BAT tests, A-Scan ultrasonography and fundus photography.
  • Assist the physician during diagnostic and minor surgical procedures, including instrumentation, sterile preparations and documentation.
  • Administer topical medications or diagnostic drugs as required by the provider for testing or treatment.
  • Assist the physician with patient education pertaining to the treatment prescribed.
  • Prepare procedure and exam rooms; inventory equipment and supplies; replenish supplies and equipment. Maintain adequate stock levels of medication samples and supplies.
  • Keep rooms and equipment clean between procedures. Follow clinic policies for infection control in handling and disposing of infectious hazardous waste.
  • Perform other duties including administrative duties as needed or assigned
  • Participates in departmental meetings, appropriate in-services and educational opportunities.
  • Observes department policies and procedure, environment and infection control standards
  • Cleans the exam/treatment rooms after each patient and/or procedure including equipment used in accordance with infection control guidelines.
  • Attends required annual in services on Safety and Infection control
  • Observes OSHA regulations including principles of standard precautions.

What you will need:

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Certification: Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification as Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or equivalent, Current CPR certification with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
  • Experience: 1-2 years in a Ophthalmologist's office Preferred
