Description

Vedder Price's Chicago office is looking for a Desktop Systems Engineer. The Desktop Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting the firm's Microsoft Windows desktop environment. This includes managing system imaging, application packaging, patching, security, and integration with enterprise tools and services. The role plays a key part in optimizing the end-user experience, supporting desktop hardware lifecycles, and collaborating with IT teams and business stakeholders to deliver efficient, secure, and scalable solutions.

As the Desktop Systems Engineer, your duties will include but not be limited to:



  • Design, build, and maintain standard Windows desktop images for physical and virtual environments, including Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).
  • Evaluate and implement tools and processes for automated system deployment using Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM), Intune, and related technologies.
  • Develop and maintain application packaging standards for consistent and secure software delivery.
  • Ensure system compliance with security standards, including patching, BitLocker encryption, AppLocker policies, Windows Firewall configuration, and user access control.
  • Assess and select desktop and laptop hardware, working with vendors and stakeholders to ensure compatibility with operating system standards.
  • Optimize user profile management across environments to ensure a seamless and consistent user experience.
  • Manage BIOS configurations, driver updates, and firmware standards for supported devices.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on desktop technologies, providing escalation support to Desktop Administrators and collaborating with other IT teams.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying system performance issues, proposing optimizations, and proactively maintaining desktop systems.
  • Participate in enterprise initiatives such as Windows feature updates, technology refreshes, and infrastructure migrations.
  • Contribute to documentation, knowledge base articles, and technical training resources for IT staff and end users.
  • Lead or support key IT projects, ensuring timelines, milestones, and goals are met through effective planning and coordination.


Skills & Competencies:



  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills in enterprise desktop environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, customer-focused setting.
  • Proven project coordination and planning capabilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills-able to collaborate across departments and explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Deep understanding of Windows operating systems, user interface design, and application interaction.
  • Commitment to security best practices and adherence to firm-wide information security policies.


Qualifications & Required Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in desktop engineering and systems administration.
  • At least 3 years' hands-on experience with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM/SCCM), Intune, or related tools.
  • Experience in the legal or professional services industry is a plus.
  • Microsoft certifications are strongly preferred.


Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in the following software:



  • Group Policy and Active Directory
  • Windows OS (10/11), Windows Server
  • PowerShell scripting and automation
  • Application packaging and deployment
  • Desktop virtualization (e.g., AVD)
  • Security tools (e.g., BitLocker, AppLocker)
  • Networking basics: DNS, DHCP, DFS


Compensation Range: $95,000/yr. to $118,000/yr.
