About the Job

This position is within the molecular virology and RNA biology laboratory of Kathleen
Boris-Lawrie on the Saint Paul campus. The employee will carry out responsibilities with
the instruction, guidance and direction by the supervisor and will be expected to
become increasingly independent and serve as a resource for other lab members. The
work will be molecular methodologies to test hypotheses and improve knowledge of
RNA mechanisms in viruses and host cells.

Job responsibilities:
(60%) Cell-based assays testing viral and host RNA function under a variety of
conditions using molecular techniques
(20%) Data analysis and report generation by a variety of software packages
(20%) Literature and database analysis using software packages (e.g. NCBI, MEME,
ClustralW, Geneious)

This will be a one-year contract with possible extension

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Genetics or related field of science with
relevant coursework in molecular and cellular biology or a combination of relevant education and scientific experience totaling 4 years.
Previous experience in a research setting performing cell culture and transfection, RNA
preparation and analysis by RT-qPCR
Proficiency in electronic data documentation of work plan, data and results, and
database management
Listens respectfully and openly to others regardless of position or background
Maintains productive relationships with others even when faced with conflict
Demonstrates ability on a daily basis to identify and troubleshoot problems

Preferred:
Long-term sterile tissue culture and analysis of cellular RNA and proteins by IP
and seq analysis, HPLC and mass spec
Publication that displays the applicants technical writing skills
Previous experience with statistical analysis of data and figure design
Experience processing and presenting ONT seq data

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment

Position Type: Civil-Service & Non-Faculty Labor Represented Staff
