Overview

The Nexus Water Group team has an opportunity for a Construction Inspector. This position supports the delivery of projects of varying size and complexity, primarily related to water and wastewater utilities for the business unit. The role will be responsible for the inspection and testing of utility construction within residential and commercial development projects as well as capital projects to ensure compliance with utility standards and practices. Performs a variety of administrative and technical duties

Work Location and Schedule

This position will be based in Raleigh, NC with some travel. May occasionally or frequently travel between worksites on company time or be temporarily assigned to a region.

What You'll Do



  • Inspects the construction of and oversees testing of water mains, sewer mains, reclaimed mains, force mains and lift stations to ensure compliance with company standards and specifications as well as NCDEQ regulations.
  • Inspects the construction of various capital projects such as treatment plant rehabilitations, gravity sewer lining, manhole rehabilitations, treatment plant expansions/upgrades and utility relocations.
  • Maintains routine inspection and progress reports for all assigned projects.
  • Inspects the construction sites and observes practices for adherence to health and safety standards. Works with the Project Managers to determine construction progress and identify and address issues.
  • Coordinates sequencing of capital projects with Operations staff as needed to ensure continuity of service.
  • Coordinates preliminary project information requests such as locates and conflicts with Area Managers.
  • Coordinates inspections with engineers and contractors.
  • Reviews plans, shop drawings, as-builts and related submittals for compliance with Company and regulatory standards and specifications.
  • Reviews quantities identified on pay applications.
  • Assists with gathering project closeout documents prior to final pay application and/or regulatory approvals.
  • Notifies management of any current or pending items that could impact the successful construction of or completion of projects.
  • Ensures that work performed under capital projects meets Company safety policies and procedures.
  • Notifies management staff of any current or pending escalations, issues or decision relating to projects, or items that could impact the success of projects.
  • Attends preconstruction and progress meetings as scheduled.
  • Attends routine safety training meetings.
  • Attends project team status meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


What You'll Bring

Experience



  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of construction experience, preferably related to a combination of safety, inspection, distribution, collection system and treatment plant operation.
  • Technical training in construction methods and standards related to the water & sewer industry.


Education and Licenses



  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Requires a valid driver's license


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; ability to learn internal and job-related software programs
  • Ability to calculate basic mathematical equations.
  • Ability to read engineering plans and specifications
  • Ability to prioritize work
  • Ability to document, accurate information and provide reports.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Exhibit excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, including negotiating, decision-making research and analysis, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to foster a safe working environment for fellow workers and vendors.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, contractors, engineers, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and implement a variety of projects, construction, engineering and operations concepts, practices and procedures. Ability to calculate basic mathematical equations.
  • Ability to motivate others in pursuit of Company goals and objectives
  • Ability to perform physical duties such as occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs unassisted, walking, and sitting for extended periods of time: occasionally climbing, pulling, kneeling, twisting, turning, stooping, reaching, and bending. This may include extended driving periods of up to several hours.


Work Environment



  • Normal office environment, most duties may be performed in the field.
  • May work on a moderate amount of mentally or sensory stimulating tasks.
  • This position may be exposed to loud noise, wastewater, chemicals, and high voltage where electrical shock is a potential hazard.
  • Occasionally encounters extreme cold or hot conditions and potential contact with hazardous chemicals.
  • Must wear/use all protective equipment where required including hearing protection, safety glasses, chemical suites and personal protective equipment when handling hazardous materials; must be OSHA compliant.
