Job Description

The UMKC Office of Human Resources is seeking a dedicated Staff Learning and Development Specialist (UM Job Title: HR Specialist III) to play a pivotal role in shaping the professional development and engagement of our workforce. This dynamic position offers the opportunity to coordinate campus-wide learning initiatives, assist with employee recognition programs, and cultivate a vibrant and collaborative work environment.

As a key contributor to the HR team, you will coordinate training activities, analyze compliance data, and administer development funds that empower employees to advance in their careers. You will also lead efforts to promote meaningful engagement activities, including wellness events and staff awards, while providing administrative support to critical functions like HR website maintenance and employee assistance programs. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Learning and Development

  • Performance Evaluations: Answer employee questions and offer guidance to HR Business Partners to support smooth execution of the ePerformance evaluation process. Administrative tasks include pulling completion reports, sending campus communications to those with pending tasks, and creating or transferring evaluation documents as needed.
  • Compliance Training: Serves as the primary campus contact for addressing employee questions related to compliance training. Promotes timely completion of these trainings by sending reminders to employees with pending tasks. Liaises with UM System Learning and Organizational Development team when necessary.
  • Employee Trainings:
  • Employee Surveys: Regularly review exit survey data and discuss insights with HR Business Partners, as needed. Promote and incentivize completion of pulse survey administered by UM System, assist HR Business Partners in creating presentations to share findings with campus unit leaders, and provide administrative support as needed.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Promote EAP resources, provide information and support to employees seeking assistance, and organize outreach activities to enhance program awareness and utilization.
  • Talent Management Advisory Committee (TMAC): Represent campus-specific concerns, cascade system-level updates to HR team and campus employees, and ensure alignment with system-wide initiatives.
  • Professional Development Fund Committee: Support the SPEER Professional Development Fund by promoting availability, reviewing applications with the committee, preparing approval letters, and ensuring timely reimbursements.

Employee Engagement and Recognition

  • Employee Engagement Events: Organize and promote employee engagement events such as "Take Your Child to Work Day," wellness events such as "Million Mile Month, and support activities tied to UMKC community partnerships (e.g., Royals, Chiefs, KC Zoo & Aquarium, KC Current, Sporting KC). Facilitate regular engagement activities for HR staff to foster a positive work environment.
  • Annual Staff Awards: This committee helps celebrate staff achievements and contributions by organizing an annual recognition event. Responsibilities include reviewing award descriptions, supporting the nomination processes on campus, facilitating a nomination committee meeting for campus-level awards, and assisting with logistical aspects such as ordering awards and gifts, food and beverage, and venue organization.

Administrative Support

  • HR Website Updates: Responsible for regularly updating various pages on the HR department website. This includes coordinating with HR Specialists to ensure that all content is current, accurate, and aligns with organizational standards and goals. This may involve troubleshooting website issues, drafting updates to verbiage, and monitoring site performance to enhance user experience.
  • Labor Law Posters: Coordinate with HR Business Partners to confirm required quantities, oversee the ordering process to ensure accurate procurement, track poster locations across campus, and ensure all displayed posters are updated to the current version in compliance with regulations.
Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 or more years of administrative experience, preferably in HR or a related field
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Previous experience with event planning and coordination (e.g., employee engagement activities, campus-wide trainings)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Learning Management Systems (LMS) and e-learning platforms.
  • Ability to use data and analytics to highlight trends and make recommendations
  • HR certification preferred (e.g., SHRM-CP, PHR)
Anticipated Hiring Range

Up to $26.00 per hour commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.

Other Information

Standard working hours for this position are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Upon successful completion of the initial probationary period, flexible work arrangements, such as an adjusted schedule or hybrid work options, may be considered. These will be evaluated individually to ensure they align with both team and organizational needs.
