Public Safety Security Officer works under the general supervision of the sergeant on duty and is responsible for providing and maintaining campus security of campus buildings, equipment, and grounds.

Essential Duties

  • Observes the campus for suspicious or unlawful activities and make proper responses; directs traffic and oversees crowd control activities at school events.
  • Conducts regular inspections of campus buildings, and grounds for security and safety violations.
  • Responds to questions and requests for assistance from faculty, students, staff and the general public as needed.
  • Locks and unlocks doors as requested.
  • Compiles and maintains accurate written reports of incidents and investigations, and submits to proper authorities.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus one year of security or help desk experience or a related field.
  • Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education.
  • OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

Rate of Pay $14.00 per hour *Higher compensation may be considered based on qualifications directly related to position.

  • Current policies, procedures, and strategies of public safety and security.
  • Knowledge of computer software used within the department
  • Strong written and oral communications and relational skills
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and members of the public.
  • Composing and writing reports, forms, and memos.
  • Mentally analyze a situation, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure in area of responsibility.
  • Read and understand written instruction and communicate information and ideas in clear and concise written form.

The work environment typically consists of a professional office setting with a moderate noise level, including sounds from conversations, office equipment, and occasional movement of staff. Employees may occasionally need to visit other areas, such as storage rooms, conference spaces, or outdoor locations, where environmental conditions may vary. Infrequently, exposure to louder noise levels or physical activities, such as moving lightweight materials, might be required.
