JOB TITLE: Assessment Specialist, Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) JOB PURPOSE: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Assessment Specialist works with the Associate Director of Assessment to help colleges, academic, and co-curricular departments, and faculty to determine assessment needs, conduct assessment training and research, and measure how students, (resident and online) are meeting established student learning outcomes (SLOs). The Specialist will be familiar with how to use various assessment resources to gauge the effectiveness of teaching and learning. The incumbent will provide SoTL and SLOs training, workshops, and academies for faculty and new members of the University's Assessment Committee. The Specialist will be familiar with and assist faculty in writing SoTL assessment research proposals and conducting research. The Specialist will track and publish on the University's assessment website all current assessment activities, including SoTL projects, highlighting research undertaken to improve teaching and learning. The Assessment Specialist will assist in gathering evidence of student learning, including Institutional Performance Indicators, SoTL research results, and direct and indirect assessment results. The Specialist will publish these results on the UW assessment website to ensure transparency of the institution's use of student learning assessment to improve its educational endeavors. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Student Learning Outcomes As needed, assist faculty in creating and revising SLOs Assessment Plan Create and maintain SoTL annex for the University Assessment Plan Help create a culture for assessment and SoTL at UW Assessment Resources: Research and be familiar with how to use various assessments resources Plan, execute, and assess SoTL and SLOs training, workshops, and academies Provide faculty training on assessment resource/tools, assessment management systems, and current assessment practices as well as providing training to newly appointed university assessment committee members. Evaluate SoTL assessment proposals for potential grant award Publish assessment best practices and resources on University assessment website Current Assessment Activities Coordinate with the USP committee on assessment activities Track and publish progress of SLOs SoTL projects, especially those awarded grants, on the University assessment webpage Recommend college, department, program, and/or course to be highlighted for SoTL assessment work on the University assessment website Evidence of Student Learning Assist faculty in publishing, presenting, and disseminating SoTL project results Review current and previous work, analyzing data and trends, and evaluate for effectiveness and potential for growth and change based on these findings Use software tools to analyze both quantitative and qualitative assessment data at the individual class, course, and curricular or programmatic level to suggest what to change or continue within specific contexts. Use of Student Learning Assessment Recommend and synthesize SoTL research that led to changes in a college, program, and/or course to publish on University assessment website Other Duties Assists the ECTL with the coordination and implementation of events such as the Faculty Learning Communities, Faculty Training, and similar events. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Assessment, works with contracts, services, organizations, and individuals as assigned. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and the development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Associate Director of Assessment Uses software tools (word processing, spreadsheets and database management using Microsoft Office, statistical programs such as SPSS or R, Excel and on-line survey tools such as Qualtrics, and data visualization tools, such as Tableau) to analyze both quantitative and qualitative assessment data at the individual class session level, course level, and curricular or programmatic level to suggest what to change or continue within specific contexts. Supports the overall success of the ECTL by performing all other duties as assigned. COMPETENCIES: Communication Skills Attention to Detail Technical/Professional Knowledge Work Prioritization & Management Collaboration Analysis/Problem Identification MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Master's degree and at least one year experience in higher education assessment or Scholarship of Teaching & Learning projects and administration is required. EXPERIENCE: At least one year experience in higher education assessment or SoTL projects and administration is required. Experience with educational development preferred. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Strong organizational skills. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills. Ability to understand and execute a university wide vision while attending to day-to-day details and functions. Publication experience in education and/or scholarship of teaching and learning.
