Job Description

The College of Veterinary Medicine at MU is on a mission to educate and train outstanding clinicians and scientists, generate new knowledge, engage stakeholders, and foster economic growth, all of which promote and protect the health and welfare of animals and people. We are currently seeking a Veterinary Assistant for our Anesthesia Service. The Anesthesia service provides care and support to hospital patients during procedures and operations, supporting many of the other services within the Veterinary Health Center. The Veterinary Assistant is critical to ensuring timely and efficient administration of the service.

Standard responsibilities will vary based on clinic needs, but may include:

  • Enter billing information and charges for the Anesthesia service in a timely manner.
  • Check daily logs for controlled drugs against anesthesia records to ensure accurate record keeping.
  • Order and stock central supply and pharmacy items for the service.
  • Clean and maintain the anesthesia area including resetting anesthesia stations to ensure efficient case flow.
  • Open and close operating rooms at the beginning and the end of each day.
  • Ensure that the three crash carts used by the service are fully stocked and kept in a functional state.
  • Help maintain anesthesia delivery equipment (e.g., charting and scheduling CO2 absorbent changes)
  • Providing case management assistance to technicians as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Veterinarians throughout the Midwest refer animal clients to the Veterinary Health Center for specialized diagnoses and treatment. With sophisticated therapeutic equipment that includes an underwater treadmill, advanced imaging techniques, and groundbreaking equine lameness diagnostic equipment, we are a center for animal healthcare. Our facility, located at Clydesdale Hall, provides state-of-the-art teaching and medical services, including ambulatory services. In addition to regular check-ups and preventive health care, we feature cutting edge surgical and intensive lifesaving medical care.

Shift

Full-time, 40 hours per week, with typical hours being Monday through Friday, between 8a and 5p.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in a veterinary medical setting is desirable but not required.

  • Possess excellent communication skills and be able to interact with pet families and the veterinary team.
  • Be detailed-oriented and well-organized in gathering medical histories, carrying out instructions, documenting patient statistics, and updating computerized medical records for billing.
  • Enjoy working with animals and have the ability to comfort, handle and restrain large and/or small patients.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary: $15.00/hour
Grade: GGS-004
