Operations Manager

General Summary of Position

Provide technical assistance for the Division of Marine Operations. Incumbent inspects, maintains, repairs and modifies all types of related equipment such as floats, piers, gangways, moorings, boats and Fox Point Pavilion. Has a working knowledge of hand and power tools, welding and fabricating of various types of metals as well as the ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and manuals. Ability to work in all types of weather conditions and be available for off-hour work requirements.

Examples of Duties

• Enforces the University approved Marine Safety Plan by noting deficiencies and reporting them to the Director of Marine Operations.
• Train and supervise student worker staff and assist in their scheduling.
• Pilot's university vessels engaged in both non-personnel, marine related work and passenger services.
• Ensures marina and all equipment are always in good working order.
• Works with current maintenance software system and stays current with newer technologies.
• Assembles and or reassembles various equipment and apparatus using small hand tools, portable power tools and electrical and electronic testing equipment and devices and pressure gauges according to specifications, schematics, blueprints, technical manuals and/or diagrams.
• Tests various types of equipment using electrical and electronic testing equipment and devices and small hand tools to determine causes of failure and malfunction.
• Disassembles equipment to locate and determine malfunctions, to replace defective parts and/ or to make necessary repairs or adjustments according to specifications, schematics, blueprints, technical manuals, and/or diagrams.
• Installs and operates various types of equipment such as mechanical, electrical, electronic and electromechanical, using small hand tools, portable power tools and various testing equipment and devices in accordance with established specifications, schematics, blueprints, technical manuals and/or diagrams.
• Inspects various mechanical, electrical, electronic and electromechanical equipment, instruments and apparatus using small hand tools, portable power tools and various testing equipment to ensure their functional operation according to specifications, schematics, blueprints, technical manuals and/or diagrams.
• Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on various equipment, instruments and apparatus using small hand tools and portable power tools to ensure proper and safe operation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• U. S. Coast Guard 50 Ton Masters License and/ or ability to obtain.
• U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Sail endorsement preferred
• 10 years related experience
• Certified in CPR/ First Aid
• Class 2A/1C Lifting and Hoisting Engineer License preferred
• Driver's License Class D
• Knowledge of marina operations and safety practices
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in electrical and mechanical work
• Knowledge of the methods and techniques for conducting electrical and electronic tests on equipment
• Skill in the use of precision measuring equipment, gauges, and instrumentation such as micrometers, calipers, levels, etc.
• Skill in the use of small hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, handheld power tools such as saws, drills, hammers, etc.
• Skill in the operation of and maintenance of small boats and associated safety practices and procedures for power, sail and rowing vessels.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints, and manuals
• Ability to work odd hours and be on call during emergency situations
• Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others
• Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
• Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and be able to provide proof
• Must pass a pre-employment drug test and enroll in a USCG approved random drug testing program

Supervision Received:

Incumbent reports directly to the Director of Marine Operations or their designee, employees of higher grade, who provide technical and policy guidance.

Incumbent works with student staff to train and supervise them in their day-to-day activities; supervises contractors on project from start to finish.
