Job Summary

This position description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications which may be required of the employee assigned to the position.

The employee in this role must be knowledgeable of professional standards, practices and guidelines of the Perioperative area. Additional responsibilities of this position include providing assistance and support services in the clinical and non-clinical areas of the operating room. The incumbent also works alongside other support staff and participates as an ORA team member with responsibilities for maintaining the O.R. environment. The employee in this role participates in activities that clean, organize and prepare all areas of the Main Operating Room. In addition, but not limited to, this position facilitates transport of supply items, instruments, and equipment. The employee in this role will transport patients, transport specimens, transport deceased patients, and under direct supervision of a registered nurse, may assist with other patient care activities. This position is also responsible for maintaining and organizing supply items, instruments, and equipment, properly handle clean and infectious waste, distribute sterile supplies, instruments and equipment, clean and test autoclaves for proficiency, document properly in various logs, and provide other general duties pertinent to the department's needs.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR within 3 months of hire.
  • High School diploma or equivalent work experience/training
  • Experience in a hospital procedural or operating room setting.
  • 1. Knowledgeable of the total Operating Room environment including AORN professional standards, practices and guidelines of the Perioperative area, including but not limited to:
  • a. Knowledge of aseptic technique
  • b. Knowledge of Universal Precautions
  • c. Knowledge of proper surgical attire
  • d. Knowledge of traffic patterns in the surgical suites
  • e. Knowledge, skill and ability to transport surgical patients
  • f. Knowledge, skill and ability to implement surgical case containment protocols & OR sanitation techniques
  • g. Knowledge, skill and ability to identify emergent and routinely used surgical equipment and supplies
  • h. Knowledge, skill and ability to care for surgical instruments and equipment
  • i. Knowledge, skill and ability to handle infectious waste and hazardous substances (chemicals used for cleaning, sanitation, disinfection and sterilization).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six months (6) experience working in a hospital, procedure or operating room setting.

Department Overview

Perioperative Services at UC Davis Health encompasses multiple Operating Rooms, Preoperative and Post-Anesthesia Units, and Sterile Processing Departments, across the UC Davis Health Campus. Surgical care is provided across the entire life spectrum, includes a wide range of inpatient and ambulatory surgical specialties, including (but not limited to: ACS Level 1 Trauma, Bariatric, Burn, Cardiac, Colorectal, Endocrine, ENT, Gynecology, comprehensive Neurosurgery, Oncologic, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Trauma, comprehensive Orthopedic (Spine, Foot & Ankle, Hand & Hand Trauma), Otolaryngology, Pain, Plastics, Robotics, Thoracic, Transplant, Vascular, , Urology, and Uro-Gyn.
Additionally, our Children's Surgery Center provides comprehensive surgical care in the full-range of surgical specialties in an age-appropriate setting.
