Job Description
The Specialist Environmental, Health and Safety 2 is responsible for providing all locations within assigned area with specialized support and oversight in the areas of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), warehouse workplace and fleet (driver) safety, and environmental program management.
What your day will look like:
- Provides locations with guidance to ensure they safely operate in regulatory compliance with all applicable OSHA and DOT requirements in a manner consistent with CCBCU policies & procedures
- Conducts regular OSHA, DOT, & EPA regulatory compliance audits & workplace safety, fleet safety & environmental program reviews at each assigned location
- Prepares reports to Location, Division, & Corporate Leadership to remedy and/or escalate identified issues as needed
- Analyzes loss experience & related data to work with leadership to develop plans to reduce workplace incidents, accidents, & injuries
- Assists leadership in developing & communicating annual goals. Uses data collected from incident, accident, & injury reports to provide division operations management with topics for safety training
- Collaborates with leadership to develop a schedule of required regulatory & Company-based workplace safety & environmental training
- Monitors & communicates completion of training by associates, including Supervisors & Managers, & ensures that the requisite documentation has been submitted & filed
- Collaborates with leadership to implement & ensure adherence to Company Risk Management/EHS policies & procedures
- Ensures that emergency preparedness & evacuation drills are held regularly & that all personnel understand & conform with the emergency preparedness & response plan requirements
- Conducts regular internal workplace safety & environment program reviews to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements & CCBCU policies & assists with third-party audit preparation
- Assist locations with federal & state OSHA, EPA, DOT audits, inspections, & inquiries consistent with established CCBCU policies & practices
- Participates in monthly safety committee meetings & provides guidance to ensure meetings are effective
- Leads workplace safety & environment calls with operations managers to communicate new Risk Management/EHS programs, review impending regulatory changes, & share best practices
- Holds regular reviews with Management on current performance, compliance status, internal programs, third-party audit findings, & action plans for workplace safety & environmental programs
- Determines the need for outside contractors/consultants to provide safety, security, or environmental services & participates in the selection process
- Collaborate with EHS, Risk, & other key stakeholders to identify emerging issues & to develop new performance improvement plans to ensure a high level of workplace safety, environment performance, & regulatory compliance
- Reports to the EHS Supervisor on the workplace safety, environment performance & regulatory compliance status of each location
- Monitors and documents all incident/accident/injury reports on a weekly basis to ensure accurate reporting & investigation by supervisors/managers - participate in the location accident review board
- Reviews findings of third-party audits & collaborate with management to develop remediate plans, schedules and/or disciplinary actions in a timely & consistent manner
- Internal: Regularly interfaces & collaborates with Leadership, Executive, & Corporate teams
- External: Interface with regulatory agency personnel, third party auditors, trade associations, vendors, & industry peers to stay current on emerging issues & best practices
What you need to succeed:
- Minimum age 18 years old
- Valid driver's license required and obligation to maintain compliance with UNITED fleet policy
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by position and compliance with UNITED safety policies
- Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of the job
- Ability to read, write and speak English
- Ability to maintain a neat professional appearance within Company guidelines
- Ability to maintain safety and security of Company assets
- Ability to utilize all Company provided resources and technology
- Ability to demonstrate independence, analytical skills, and strategic thinking
- Effective communication skills
- Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or 3 to 6 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, or flexible schedule as required
- OSHA 511 highly preferred and ability to acquire within one year of employment
- Smith System or PACE driver trainer certification preferred
- Knowledge of distribution (DOT) in Environmental, Health and Safety best practices is preferred
- Experience monitoring driver hours of service perferred
- Must be able to effectively manage multiple priorities and plans across multiple locations
- Ability to travel up to 75%
- Ability to demonstrate strong problem-solving, organization, teamwork, ethical and customer service skills
Physical Requirements
Position will be required to comply with the CCBCU Personal Protective Equipment Program. Position is required to wear safety toed shoes when performing the following tasks: Operating Powered Industrial Equipment or Working in an Area where Powered Industrial Equipment is in use, Fleet Maintenance, Working with Palletized Product, Use of Hand Trucks/Dollies to Deliver Product, Cooler Services, etc (X) None = 0% (0 hrs) (L) Limited = 1% (1 hr) (O) Occasionally = 2%-25% (1-2 hrs) (F) Frequently = 26%-50% (3-4 hrs) (R) Repeatedly = 51%-75% (5-6 hrs) (C) Continuously = 76%-100% (7+ hrs)
