Summary/Description:
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Retzky College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice, Ambulatory Pharmacy Services is seeking a full-time Clinical Faculty (Open Rank)/Clinical Pharmacist. This position serves as an educator of students enrolled in the Retzky College of Pharmacy, providing these students with direct experience in the provision of pharmaceutical care and emphasizing the patient care philosophy of practice as delineated in the college mission statement. Clinical Faculty (Open Rank)/Clinical Pharmacist duties and responsibilities are related to the provision of patient care; research, scholarship and the education and training of pharmacy students, residents, fellows and international pharmacists; and other duties related to the Departments of Pharmacy Practice and Ambulatory Pharmacy Services.

Duties:
The academic responsibilities of the clinical faculty member include the provision of didactic lectures and precepting entry level Doctor of Pharmacy students, PGY1 residents and PGY2 residents. Additional expectations may include scholarly activities, including presentations and publications.

Clinical Pharmacist duties include working closely with pharmacy technicians, students, medical staff and patients in providing patient-centered clinical pharmacy services. In addition, this position will also assist the ambulatory pharmacy team with the development, optimization, auditing and quality improvement of ambulatory pharmacy programs, compliance and medication safety initiatives.
  • Participate in the education of nursing staff, medical staff, and all members of the health care team.
  • Participate in site specific and departmental staff development by designing, evaluating and providing in-services, continuing education programs and by serving as a preceptor and role model.
  • Participate in the education of PharmD students, PGY1 and PGY2 residents, international pharmacists, and other pharmacy staff by serving as a preceptor and role model as defined by the guidelines and requirements of the Department of Pharmacy Practice.
  • Provide didactic teaching at the College by serving as recitation facilitator, lecturer, and/or course coordinator.
  • Facilitate the advancement of knowledge in health care by participating in research and scholarly activities by continually participating in at least one service related project and publish at least 1 article equivalent annually.
  • Attend and actively participate in Departmental, College and Team meetings.
  • Represent the Department at University and UI Health committees as assigned.
  • Participate in public service events (e.g., Brown Bags, community education, etc.).
  • Review, evaluate and assist in the continuous revisions of site-specific Pharmacy Practice and Ambulatory Pharmacy policy and procedures as appropriate; and assure that such policy and procedures are being met.
  • Demonstrate priority-setting in his/her approach to patient care demands in order to assure optimum efficiency and cost effective use of resources.
  • Actively participate in drug use evaluations, quality assurance programs, and therapeutic guideline development.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of basic continuous quality improvement initiatives or quality assurance programs to improve patient care and its outcomes.
  • Work with Clinical Teams as assigned to initiate global patient care changes and arrange adequate clinical coverage.
  • Assist in providing accurate, efficient and appropriate drug distribution services when needed.
  • Facilitate communication and cooperation between all individuals involved in the drug use process in order to assure the accurate and timely provision of drug products.
  • Identify, communicate and document problems related to drug dispensing.
  • Perform duties necessary to facilitate therapeutic decisions including the location, retrieval, interpretation, summarization, and dissemination of current literature concerning a patient's drug therapy.
  • Conduct and document medication histories on selected/appropriate patients.
  • Intervene whenever necessary to improve the quality of patient care, provide drug information and ensure rational and cost effective drug therapy.
  • Document in the patient's medical record patient care activities and drug related problems including but not limited to: pharmacokinetic consultations, patient education notes, medication histories, pharmacotherapeutic interventions, adverse drug reactions and other significant recommendations or activities.
  • Enhance continuity of pharmaceutical care by providing Pharmacists, Physicians, Nurses, and other health care professionals with necessary information related to a patient's therapeutic regimens.
  • Advise/teach patients and their families/caretakers on the proper use of medications/devices in order to assure safe and effective use of, and compliance with, therapeutic regimens.
  • Direct and perform compliance audits.
  • Collect, aggregate, and manipulate data using Microsoft Excel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy PharmD program.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for Illinois licensure as a professional pharmacist.
  • Completed ASHP accredited PGY1 residency training.
  • Must possess knowledge and skills to qualify for a non-tenured clinical faculty position with the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the UIC College of Pharmacy. Academic rank commensurate with experience.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively function with the health care professionals and patients within the assigned patient care area.
  • Prior experience or demonstrated ability to effectively participate in didactic and/or clerkship teaching.
  • Desire to conduct scholarly writing and research.
  • Proficient in use of the Microsoft Office software suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Highly preferred: strong clinical knowledge base; analytical and problem-solving skills;ability to consistently meet deadlines; demonstrate flexibility and ability to work independently and adapt to a changing work environment; excellent planning, time management and organizational skills.
  • Completion of PGY2 residency.
