About the Position

As a Systems Engineer on the Cloud, Infrastructure, and Platform Services (CIPS) team, you will play a key role in supporting and maintaining the County's enterprise infrastructure, including virtualized systems, storage, and hybrid cloud services. You will help ensure the performance, availability, and security of the infrastructure that powers critical services for our residents.

This is a hands-on engineering role that will involve building, configuring, and troubleshooting systems in both on-premises datacenter environments and public cloud platforms. You'll contribute to the development and automation of infrastructure services, support modernization initiatives, and work closely with senior engineers, architects, and cybersecurity professionals to ensure seamless integration and operational excellence.

We Require

  • Two years of hands-on experience administering, configuring, and supporting server, storage, or virtualization systems in an enterprise IT environment

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or closely related field

  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis

We Also Value

  • Experience managing Windows and/or Linux servers, including basic patching, system monitoring, and performance troubleshooting

  • Experience with hybrid or public cloud environments (e.g., Microsoft Azure or AWS), including basic tasks such as creating virtual machines or configuring storage services

  • Experience supporting infrastructure tasks aligned with identity and access management, networking, or security best practices in a secure environment

  • Experience with basic scripting or task automation using tools such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python

  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, or equivalent, including VM provisioning and resource allocation

  • Experience supporting data protection processes, with an understanding of enterprise storage (SAN/NAS) and backup technologies

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) concepts or tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, or ARM/Bicep)

Job Contributions

  • Support the deployment, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of on-premises and cloud infrastructure systems, including virtual machines, storage, backup, and directory services.

  • Assist with the monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolution of systems-related issues, ensuring service availability and performance within operational SLAs.

  • Collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to execute infrastructure projects and upgrades, including participation in planning, testing, and implementation.

  • Document systems configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides to support consistency and knowledge sharing across the team.

  • Participate in change management processes, ensuring updates and modifications follow established standards and minimize service disruption.

  • Contribute to the administration of virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) and assist with provisioning, decommissioning, and resource optimization of compute environments.

  • Support cloud infrastructure activities such as VM creation, resource tagging, and basic configuration of services in platforms like Azure or AWS.

  • Help maintain and verify backup and recovery processes, ensuring data integrity and compliance with disaster recovery objectives.

  • Assist with applying security controls, system updates, and hardening configurations under the guidance of cybersecurity and senior engineering teams.

  • Participate in on-call rotation and operational support activities, including routine maintenance, system patching, and incident response.

Working Conditions

  • Exerting up to 10 lbs. occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
