We have an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Research Scientist III - Non-targeted Analytical Chemistry at UL Research Institutes, based in our Research Triangle Park, NC office.

The Laboratory Research Scientist III - Non-targeted Analytical Chemistry will be responsible for conducting advanced non-targeted analytical chemistry research to support the Chemical Insights Research Institute (CIRI) mission of advancing human and environmental health. This role focuses on the design, execution, analysis and interpretation of non-targeted analytical chemistry studies to characterize and quantify chemical substances in a range of different media to assess human exposure potential and evaluate potential health risks. The Research Scientist III works closely with CIRI scientists and external collaborators to deliver high-quality scientific outputs that inform chemical exposure assessment, regulatory decisions, and public health guidance.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Laboratory Research Scientist III, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

• Design and execute non-targeted and targeted analytical chemistry studies to identify, quantify, and characterize chemical substances in environmental, consumer product, and biological samples.

• Apply advanced non-targeted and targeted chromatographic, spectroscopic, and mass spectrometric techniques to detect and quantify compounds, including emerging contaminants.

• Develop and validate analytical methods in accordance with applicable quality standards and regulatory requirements.

• Collect, analyze, and interpret analytical chemistry data, prepare detailed reports, data summaries, and peer-reviewed publications.

• Collaborate with software developers and data engineers to develop and refine analysis and quality evaluation tools for non-targeted analytical chemistry data.

• Collaborate with toxicologists, exposure scientists, statisticians, and other multidisciplinary team members to integrate non-targeted analytical chemistry findings into broader health risk assessments.

• Provide technical expertise in study design, data interpretation, and quality assurance for exposure projects.

• Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and scientific literature in analytical chemistry and exposure science.

• Present research findings at scientific conferences, stakeholder meetings, and technical forums.

• Serve as author on technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.

• Assist in writing research proposals and securing funding from internal and external sources.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Strong understanding of exposure science, and environmental chemistry principles.

• Demonstrated ability to independently conduct research and oversee all project phases from design to dissemination.

• Proven track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific meetings.

• Ability to clearly communicate complex analytical chemistry concepts to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

• Experience working within a laboratory quality management system.

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to integrate analytical chemistry data with broader public health research.

• Ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

• Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, or another related field

• Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience after completion of the Ph.D. by the start of the appointment.

• Solid technical proficiency in R programming.

• Demonstrated laboratory experience in LC-HRMS, LC-MS/MS and GC-MS.

• Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications and technical presentations on non-targeted analytical chemistry.

• Demonstrated experience in developing standardized workflows for the analysis and quality evaluation of non-targeted analytical chemistry data.
