The Director of Tax will be responsible for the Company's tax projects which include, but are not limited to, tax compliance, tax provision, domestic indirect taxes, tax incentives and credits, global VAT/GST, M&A tax due diligence and accounting while being an integral part of the Accounting and Finance team. This person will be hands-on for all topics related to tax and will coordinate with the Company's outside tax firms on various projects. The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: review of the quarterly and annual tax provisions and necessary disclosures for SEC reporting, compliance with state and local tax filings; compliance with global VAT/GST filings; identification and implementation of any VAT strategies; management of any M&A tax projects. This position will work closely with other members of the Finance and Accounting teams including SEC reporting, GL, FP&A, and other members of management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead tax team to compute and record the quarterly and annual tax provisions;
  • Advise other stakeholders within the Company on tax developments and strategy;
  • Lead tax team to complete the Federal and state income tax returns;
  • Manage the preparation of all state and local indirect tax returns (sales & use tax, VAT, GST, property tax, etc.) and determine registration requirements and taxability in various jurisdictions;
  • Coordinate with external advisors and internal stakeholders (PSC, etc.) to manage global VAT/GST planning and strategy;
  • Lead global VAT/GST strategy including collaboration with Global Trade Compliance;
  • Manage tax audit inquiries and audits as needed;
  • Identify, research, and pursue tax incentives or tax planning strategies specific to the Company's existing and new business activities;
  • Manage any M&A tax requirements or projects in direct collaboration with BD/FP&A;
  • Assist FP&A with forecasting and budgeting needs; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises, trains, provides work direction, and problem-solving assistance for other workers. Oversees the daily operations of other staff.
  • Supervises staff, including hiring, scheduling and assigning work, reviewing performance, and recommends salary increases, promotions, transfers, demotions, or terminations.
  • Manages others through subordinate supervisors.
  • Directs work to a CMO, Consultant, or 3rd party.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, MST and/or CPA licensure preferred.

Experience:

  • 13+ years or more experience in public accounting and/or a corporate tax setting.
  • M&A tax experience in a public or corporate tax setting.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries is desirable but not required.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of ASC 740;
  • Thorough knowledge of US Federal and local income tax compliance regulations and processes;
  • Thorough knowledge of state and local indirect taxes, including sales & use tax, VAT, GST, property tax, and others;
  • General knowledge of M&A tax law, due diligence process, and planning strategies;
  • Working knowledge of OneSource Tax Provision and/or Alteryx software;
  • Excellent analytical, written communication, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Environment: primarily working indoors, performing clerical work.
  • Travel not required.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across severalU.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The base pay range for this positionis $181,500 - $258,000 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidate's geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location. The base pay offered will take into account the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors. In addition to the base salary, as part of our Total Rewards program, Exelixis offers comprehensive employee benefits package, including a 401k plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts. Employees are also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus program, or if field sales staff, a sales-based incentive plan.
