Student Auxiliary Services - UMKC Student Union

Job Description

As a Daytime Custodian serving the Student Union and Atterbury Student Success Center, you'll play a key role in supporting our mission by creating a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain cleanliness and order in assigned areas including rooms, hallways, entrances, stairwells, and elevators.
  • Perform routine custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, emptying trash, and cleaning windows and drinking fountains.
  • Operate custodial equipment including auto-scrubbers, carpet extractors, pressure washers, and floor buffers.
  • Prepare rooms for meetings and events by setting up chairs, tables, and necessary equipment.
  • Clean and maintain carpets and furniture through vacuuming, shampooing, and spot cleaning.
  • Polish metal surfaces and clean interior windows.
  • Submit supply requests and ensure proper use of cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety and university guidelines.
  • Report damaged furniture or equipment to the Building Manager.
  • Perform specialized cleaning in areas requiring disinfectants and sanitation procedures.
  • Lock and unlock doors, manage lighting, and assist with building security protocols.
  • Support emergency responses and assist with large-scale moves or events as needed.
  • Supervise student employees assigned to custodial tasks
  • Carry out preventative maintenance and other related duties as assigned.

Supervision: This position reports directly to the Building Supervisor of the assigned facility, either the Student Union or the Atterbury Student Success Center.

Shift

6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of general maintenance and/or custodial experience preferred
  • Ability to read and write
  • A valid driver's license may be required for certain positions
  • Some knowledge of methods for cleaning equipment and buildings
  • Good physical coordination and mechanical aptitude sufficient to perform assigned duties
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in general custodial or housekeeping.
  • Experience in hospitality and/or event preparation.
Anticipated Hiring Range

$16.00 per hour

Shift differential of $1.00 per hour for eligible shifts (see HR-213 Shift Differential for more information)
