Executive Communications, Speechwriter

Job Overview:

RWJBH is seeking an exceptional and strategic Communications writer to support the office of the CEO. Working alongside the Chief of Staff to the CEO this individual will craft compelling, high-impact speeches, talking points, op-eds, presentations, and both internal and external communications that align with the CEO's voice, the organization's mission, and its strategic priorities. The individual will also help craft standard language, messaging, and talking points for key leaders throughout the system. The candidate will help develop and standardize language used by key leaders as they prepare for speeches and events. The ideal candidate will be a versatile and diplomatic communicator, deeply attuned to the healthcare landscape, with the ability to translate complex topics into clear, persuasive messages for diverse audiences.

Reports to:

  • The Executive Communications, Speechwriter reports directly to the Senior Vice President, External Communications with a matrixed reporting relationship to the office of the President & CEO

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, English, Journalism, Political Science, Public Health, or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of professional writing or speechwriting experience, preferably in healthcare, public policy, corporate communications, or government.
  • Demonstrated ability to write in the voice of a senior executive or public official.
  • Exceptional storytelling, research, editing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Deep understanding of healthcare industry trends, terminology, and policy issues.
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion and navigate complex organizational dynamics.
  • Deadline-driven, flexible, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Speechwriting & Messaging
    • Research, draft, and edit speeches, remarks, scripts, and talking points for the CEO for a variety of engagements (conferences, media appearances, town halls, board meetings, etc.).
    • Tailor messaging to fit audience, tone, and strategic objectives, maintaining consistency with the CEO's voice and the organization's mission and values.
  • Strategic Content Development
    • Collaborate closely with the communications team, executive leadership, and subject matter experts to develop content that supports key organizational initiatives.
    • Write op-eds, bylines, and forewords for industry publications and high-profile platforms on behalf of the CEO.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Support executive visibility by preparing compelling narratives that engage internal stakeholders (staff, clinicians) and external audiences (policy leaders, media, partners, community).
    • Anticipate communication needs related to health policy, regulatory developments, organizational transformation, and crisis response.
  • Media & Presentation Preparation
    • Help craft and implement a strategy to maximize messaging opportunities for the CEO
    • Prepare briefing materials and messaging guides for interviews, public forums, and media engagements.
    • Support development of multimedia presentations and visual storytelling to enhance executive presence.
  • Communications Team Alignment
    • Work closely with external and internal communications team to cascade CEO message to leadership throughout organization
    • Support system-wide leadership communications efforts through aligned message development and curated communications process.
