About the Job

The Researcher 1 will assist with laboratory maintenance, routine experiments, and the generation of data within the field of host-pathogen interactions. The individual must build lab-specific knowledge of processes and technical protocols to manage daily functions of the research group. This position will involve solving a range of laboratory-based problems, including optimizing protocols, performing technical assays, and coordinating with collaborators. The Researcher 1 will receive guidance and direction from the supervisor but should also work independently on tasks specific to their expertise.

Essential Duties:
50% - Carry out experiments using established protocols and analyze collected data. This includes isolating DNA/RNA for sequencing and electrophoresis, testing for antibiotic resistance, caring for an animal colony, performing ELISAs.
35% - Assist with managing general tasks that improve the daily function of the laboratory that include preparation of stock solutions, autoclaving, keeping track of supplies, assisting with ordering, and onboarding and training new researchers.
10% - Participate in writing and data presentation which will include preparing text for lab documents and manuscripts for publication, preparation of figures based on experimental data, presenting at lab meeting, and reading the scientific literature.
5% - Participate in professional development activities which will include training in new laboratory techniques as well as other professional and career development activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
* BA/BS in a Biology or Biomedical-related science including coursework in immunology,
genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, and statistics or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years.
* Technical experience working with and maintaining a research animal colony.
* Technical experience working in a laboratory setting with basic techniques such as pipetting, dilutions, and working with bacteria.
* Excellence in communication, specifically teaching within a laboratory-based setting (for ex:
experience as a Teaching Assistant)
* Experience with Microsoft tools such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Technical experience working with R pipelines, PCR, nanodrop, aseptic technique, DNA/RNA extraction.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22/hour to $23/hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 60% Appointment
