CBIZ is seeking an experienced tax professional with deep technical expertise in ASC 740 (Accounting for Income Taxes) to join our National Tax Office (NTO). This position will serve as the firmwide technical leader and subject matter expert for income tax accounting matters.

The Managing Director for ASC 740 matters will act as a central resource for the firm's tax practice and ASC 740 Center of Excellence, providing high-level technical consultation, reviewing complex provision engagements, developing standardized methodologies, and keeping professionals across the firm current on ASC 740 developments.

This is a role designed to provide national-level technical guidance, training, and oversight. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with regional ASC 740 leads, the attest practice under CBIZ CPAs, PC, and National ASC 740 leadership to ensure national consistency, audit alignment, and technical excellence.

Essential Functions and Primary Duties

  • National Technical Leadership
    • Serve as CBIZ's technical expert on ASC 740 matters, including public and private company provisions, uncertain tax positions, valuation allowances, intraperiod allocations, and purchase accounting.
    • Provide real-time consultation on complex technical questions raised by field professionals.
    • Review high-risk or complex provision engagements as requested by the ASC 740 Center of Excellence.
  • Training & Knowledge Management
    • Lead national ASC 740 training programs (introductory, intermediate, advanced).
    • Prepare and disseminate timely updates on new legislation, accounting pronouncements, and disclosure requirements.
    • Act as a resource for mentoring and upskilling ASC 740 professionals across the firm.
  • Collaboration & Governance
    • Partner with regional ASC 740 leads and the ASC 740 Center of Excellence to ensure smooth delivery and scalability of services.
    • Support audit teams by ensuring provision deliverables meet independence and audit quality requirements.
    • Participate in governance discussions and contribute to national KPIs, risk management, and process improvements.
  • Technology & Innovation
    • Champion technology solutions for ASC 740 (AI-driven research tools, web-based workpapers, provision software).
    • Collaborate with firm leadership on the adoption of emerging tools and process automation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in ASC 740 income tax accounting (Big 4 or national accounting firm preferred).
  • CPA or JD/LL.M. in Taxation; advanced degree preferred.
  • Deep technical knowledge of ASC 740 and related SEC disclosure requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise on complex technical matters and communicate effectively with senior leadership, auditors, and clients.
  • Experience with public company reporting is required.
  • Proven ability to lead training, develop technical resources, and mentor professionals.
  • Familiarity with provision technology platforms (ONESOURCE, Longview, Bloomberg Tax Workpapers, etc.) is desirable.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in Accounting, Taxation or related field preferred
  • 10 years of experience in public accounting or related field
  • 10 years supervisory experience
  • Must have active CPA or equivalent certification
  • Ability to manage deadlines, work on multiple assignments and prioritize each assignment as necessary
  • Proficient use of applicable technology
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing throughout all levels of organization, both internally and externally
  • Proven high level of business integrity, client service and leadership skills
  • Must be able to travel based on client and business needs

The annual salary target for this job in this market is $300,000 - $550,000. The specific compensation for this role will be determined based on the education, experience, and skill set of the individual selected for this position.
