Are you passionate about helping individuals navigate their mental health and substance use recovery journey through empathy, encouragement, and lived experience? At Jersey City Medical Center, our Behavioral Health teams provide compassionate, recovery-focused support to individuals experiencing mental health and substance use challenges. As a Peer Support Specialist, you'll use your personal experience with mental health and/or substance use services to build supportive relationships, encourage wellness and recovery, and help consumers connect with resources and services that support their goals. As a Peer Support Specialist, a typical day might include the following:

• Establishing and maintaining supportive, recovery-focused relationships with consumers undergoing emergency assessment and screening.

• Serving as a bridge between consumers' needs and perspectives and the goals of the treatment system, including advocating for consumers and educating treatment providers when appropriate.

• Providing one-on-one attention, encouragement, and peer support to individuals throughout the emergency assessment and screening process.

• Modeling and coaching consumers in the use of healthy coping skills, wellness strategies, and recovery practices.

• Providing life coaching and personal assistance during crisis episodes while following established crisis management procedures.

• Participating in the development of Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) and helping consumers identify supportive services and community resources to achieve their wellness and recovery goals.

• Sharing personal experiences of recovery, when appropriate, to encourage consumers as they work toward their own wellness and recovery goals.

• Documenting consumer interactions and relevant information in the medical record in accordance with program policies and procedures.

• Participating in case conferences, staff meetings, case presentations, supervision, and assigned on-site or off-site training.

• Collaborating with patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel, medical staff, and other patient-related hospital departments to support coordinated care.

• Following hospital and departmental policies regarding confidentiality, crisis management, cultural sensitivity, safety, quality assurance, infection control, and environmental standards.

• Meeting assigned productivity and customer satisfaction goals while maintaining a compassionate and respectful approach.

• Following Universal S.A.F.E.T.Y. standards by communicating clearly, speaking up about safety concerns, maintaining focus, asking questions when needed, interacting thoughtfully, and supporting team members.

• You are passionate about using lived experience to support individuals working toward mental health and/or substance use recovery.

• You enjoy building trusting relationships and providing encouragement during challenging or crisis situations.

• You are comfortable advocating for consumers and helping them communicate their needs within a treatment system.

• You believe in recovery-oriented care and enjoy helping individuals identify strengths, coping strategies, and community resources.

• You can remain calm, compassionate, and professional when working with individuals experiencing psychiatric or behavioral health crises.

• You communicate clearly and respectfully with consumers, families, clinicians, and interdisciplinary team members.

• You are dependable, receptive to coaching, and committed to creating a safe, supportive, and respectful environment.

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Current and valid Driver's License. Utilizing company vehicle to transport clients in the program.

• Current or former consumer of mental health and/or substance abuse services required.

• No prior professional experience required; behavioral health or peer-support experience preferred.

• Screener eligibility, licensure, or license eligibility as required for the position.

• Part-Time
• Monday through Friday
• 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
• No weekends required.
