Student Media at Georgia State University is looking for a broadcast engineer for WRAS-Atlanta. WRAS broadcasts content on WRAS-FM and WRAS-HD1 from Georgia Public Broadcasting 14 hours daily and from students 10 hours daily. Student programming emanates from the WRAS studio 24/7 on WRAS-HD2 and online.

Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Student Media at Georgia State University, the Chief Engineer provides engineering and technical services and maintains studio and broadcasting equipment for WRAS-FM. The Chief Engineer also provides 24-hour, 7-days-a-week on-call coverage. This is a part time position with benefits. The Chief Engineer is tasked with maintaining (and repairing, when necessary) three transmitters for WRAS-FM, located at the Panthersville Road and Chester Avenue broadcast towers. The Chief Engineer is expected to monitor their transmission to remain in compliance with all applicable technical regulations set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • On-call 24 hours, all year long, to resolve technical emergencies with appropriate compensation time allotted.
  • Maintaining and repairing the Studio Transmitter Link (STL) and Transmitter Return Link (TRL) microwave systems within FCC regulations.
  • Monitoring the performance of the main and two auxiliary broadcast antenna systems and associated transmission lines.
  • Managing the transmitter site at Panthersville, including the tower and associated equipment, to ensure FCC and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) compliance, including guy wires, base fencing, tower lighting system, security system, building access and condition of tower paint.
  • Maintaining an automated tower light alarm system to notify the Chief Radio Engineer on a 24/7/365 basis in the event of a tower light failure.
  • Monitoring and scheduling maintenance for an emergency transmitter generator.
  • Monitoring the use of the tower and site by cellular telephone tenants, including scheduling antenna maintenance visits by tenants and powering down the WRAS transmitter if needed for cellular workers to climb the tower.
  • Assisting students in the management and maintenance of an on-air music automation system and music scheduling system.
  • Working with the university and with external vendors to manage servers, ethernet network, personal computers, fiber optic links and ethernet, (broadcast network) devices, remote monitoring systems, and streaming devices.
  • Managing and maintaining the radio studio facility, including the Emergency Broadcast System receiver, broadcasting consoles, music storage/playback devices, telephone interface devices, and audio distribution devices.
  • Providing training to students on technical issues as situations may warrant.

Qualifications :

Minimum Hiring Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Electronics or related field; or a technical or vocational degree and two years of broadcasting experience; or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledgeable in FCC rules and regulations

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of related experience

  • Related experience includes responsibility for engineering aspects of a broadcast or similar facility

  • Experience maintaining high-power solid-state and tube type FM transmitters

  • Experience installing and maintaining microwave studio-transmitter links

  • Experience installing and maintaining IP networks

  • Experience troubleshooting problems with radio broadcast equipment to the circuit board level

  • Experience working with students.

  • Experience supporting the Zetta broadcast studio system.
