Job Summary: The Senior Systems Engineer fills a critical role focused on system integration activities during basic, and detailed design phases of complex industrial projects and proposals. Project scopes include green-field installations, plant relocations, and capacity/efficiency upgrades made to existing Messer plants across diverse settings within the industrial gas industry. The ideal candidate will excel at translating intricate design information into technical documentation such as Piping & Instrument Diagrams and will specify process equipment. The Senior Systems Engineer also plays a pivotal role in supporting comprehensive engineering initiatives such as product development, modularization, and standardization.

Principal Responsibilities:



  • Develop and maintain ownership for Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) throughout the lifecycle of complex projects.
  • Perform selection, sizing, and specification of process equipment (e.g. piping, valves, control valves, relief valves, instrumentation, pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, etc.) based on process data and system functional requirements. Then integrate outcomes of detailed design of this equipment by involved discipline engineers into project documentation.


  • Develop equipment lists (line lists, valve lists, instrument lists, etc.).


  • Develop alarm and trip setpoint lists.


  • Participate in HAZOP, LOPA and similar process safety reviews.


  • Participate in plant mechanical checkouts to enable development of as-built plant documentation including P&IDs and equipment lists (up to 30% in the field).


  • Continuously develop and improve designs and associated documentation for standard products, modules, and assemblies.



Required Skills:



  • Proficiency in the development of process plant documentation (P&IDs, equipment lists, etc.).
  • Proficiency in the selection, sizing, and specification of chemical process equipment such as piping, valves, control valves, relief valves, instrumentation, pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, etc.


  • Experience with Plant Engineering or smart P&ID software tools (e.g. Siemens COMOS, SmartPlant P&ID, AutoCAD P&ID) is preferred.


  • Familiarity with process safety review methodology such as HAZOP and LOPA.


  • Familiarity with chemical process simulation software (e.g. Honeywell UniSim, Aspen/HYSYS) is a plus.


  • Experience in cryogenics and industrial gases is preferred, but experience in similar chemical process industries such as petrochemical will be considered.



Basic Qualifications:



  • BS or higher degree in Chemical Engineering
  • 5 + years of experience in P&ID development, chemical systems engineering or related field.


The salary range for this position is $98,000-$131,000 . Messer provides medical, dental, vision, short term disability, life insurance and paid time off as well as other voluntary benefits, such as, long term disability in accordance with the terms and conditions of these Plans. Employees are eligible to enroll in Messer's 401(k) Plan. Employees may be eligible to participate in the company's bonus program.
