Position Summary
The Bariatric Services Quality Specialist leads continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts for Bariatric Services through clinical and operational analysis, data abstraction, and comprehensive management of bariatric quality registries. This role collaborates with bariatric surgeons, physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, and interdisciplinary teams to implement patient-centered, integrated care delivery models across the continuum of care. The Quality Specialist ensures compliance with CMS, IDPH, regulatory requirements, institutional quality initiatives, and bariatric-specific accreditation standards (e.g., MBSAQIP), while improving clinical outcomes, operational performance, and the bariatric patient experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads and coordinates quality improvement initiatives to improve bariatric clinical outcomes, patient safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Observes pre-op, perioperative, post-op, and follow-up workflows to identify gaps in performance and deviations from best practices using QI tools.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates corrective action plans based on data analysis, audits, and identified performance gaps.
  • Abstracts clinical data from electronic health records, validates accuracy, reconciles discrepancies, and applies standardized definitions.
  • Manages bariatric quality databases and national registries (e.g., MBSAQIP), ensuring complete, accurate, and timely data submission.
  • Performs data entry into electronic systems and registries and prepares reports, dashboards, and summaries for leadership and committees.
  • Analyzes clinical, operational, financial, and patient experience data to identify trends, variation, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Participates in the design and execution of audits to measure compliance with clinical standards, regulatory requirements, and accreditation criteria.
  • Educates staff on bariatric quality measures, registry requirements, and improvement methodologies; supports workflow redesign.
  • Supports bariatric accreditation readiness and ongoing compliance with CMS, IDPH, and national bariatric quality standards.
  • Collaborates with physicians, clinicians, administrators, and support services to integrate quality initiatives across departments and care settings.
  • Serves as a liaison between bariatric patients, staff, physicians, and leadership, acting as an administrative and quality resource.
  • Prepares progress reports for leadership, identifies barriers, develops action plans, and escalates issues requiring resolution.
  • Participates in special projects and performs related duties as assigned to support bariatric program and organizational goals.
  • Collects preoperative, intraoperative, 30-day postoperative, and long-term (six months and annual thereafter) follow-up data components for the MBS Program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems and through a coordinated effort with surgeon office staff.
  • Identifies patients who are not attending post-op appointments and provides relevant data and notification to members of the team . Performs necessary measures to facilitate that patients can adhere to their post-op care plan.
  • Successfully completes the MBSCR Online Training Program.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    1. Bachelor's degree as required by the position to be filled in the area of specialization inherent in the position may be required.
    2. One (1) year (12 months) of Quality Improvement work experience in a clinical or healthcare related field.


    Preferred Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in nursing
    Demonstrated track record of CQI improvements within a clinical program Knowledge of computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Knowledge of process improvement methodology and tools
    Knowledge of data collection methodology
    Knowledge of basic statistical process control components Knowledge of benchmarking tools and best practices Problem-solving and team facilitation skills
    Strong analytical skills
    Project management and time management skills
    Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
    Ability to learn and utilize new software applications for data entry and reporting Ability to train, present to small and large groups
    Ability to act as a consultant to clinicians and non-clinicians A positive attitude.
    Excellent customer service skills.
    Ability to work together and well with other team members. Ability work well under stressful situations.
