Job Overview:

The Director of Internal Communications, Physicians, Quality and Providers at RWJBarnabas Health is responsible for developing and executing strategic internal communication plans that effectively engage physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), patient experience and quality teams, and nurses across New Jersey's largest academic health system.

Reporting to the Vice President of Internal Communications, this role partners closely with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Chief Patient Experience Officer. Chief Clinical Officer for Acute Care and other clinical and operational leaders to ensure clear, consistent and timely communication that supports clinical excellence and operational alignment around efforts related to quality, patient experience and safety. The Director will play a critical role in translating complex clinical and organizational priorities into meaningful, accessible messaging tailored for clinical teams working in a range of settings, including hospitals, ambulatory settings and remote care environments. This is a unique opportunity to build a dedicated physician, quality and provider communication infrastructure from the ground up.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree (BA) in English, communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 7 years of health care experience, working across sectors, with demonstrated outcomes and increased responsibilities in marketing and/or communications.
  • Strong understanding of the academic health care environment, including hospital operations and the roles of physicians, nurses and advanced practice providers.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to simplify complex medical and operational topics.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with senior leaders and navigate complex organizational structures.
  • Experience developing communication strategies for large, multi-site or distributed organizations.
  • Comfort working in fast-paced, change-driven environments.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or large health system.
  • Familiarity with change management communication strategies.
  • Knowledge of health literacy principles and plain language best practices.
  • Flexibility, responsiveness, confidentiality and cultural sensitivity are essential to success in this role.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in a related field; or equivalent experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and lead the internal communication strategy for physicians and providers, aligning messaging with organizational mission, vision, values and clinical priorities.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Internal Communications team and the offices of the CMO and CNO, ensuring alignment of communication efforts.
  • Craft and distribute communications that support clinical initiatives, leadership updates, operational changes and culture-building strategies.
  • Translate complex clinical and operational information into clear, concise language that resonates with doctors, nurses and APPs across diverse roles and settings.
  • Manage communication channels targeting clinical audiences.
  • Ensure that messaging reflects and supports the voices of clinical leadership while being accessible and relevant to frontline providers.
  • Collaborate with marketing, external communications, quality and safety, human resources, digital teams and local site communications to coordinate system-wide messaging.
  • Build strong relationships with clinical and operational leaders across the health system to stay informed about initiatives, challenges and communication needs.
  • Measure communication effectiveness and continually refine strategies based on feedback and outcomes.
