Primary Purpose
Pacific Sacramento Surgery Center, LLC ( PSSC), a subsidiary of University of the Pacific, is launching a new Ambulatory Surgery Center ( ASC) in Sacramento, California and is hiring our inaugural Surgical Technologist. This position is essential to the successful launch of a new surgery center. The Surgical Technologist will play a hands-on role in Operating Room (OR) setup, equipment opening and assembly, instrument organization, workflow development, and operational readiness. Responsibilities include assisting with room layout, equipment placement, vendor coordination, and preparing the OR for regulatory inspection and first-day operations. Once the Ambulatory Surgery Center ( ASC) becomes operational, the role may transition into the standard Surgical Technologist scrub position.
Essential Functions
PRE- OPENING ( PHASE 1)
Operating Room Setup & Readiness

  • Unbox, assemble, and organize new surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Assist with OR layout, workflow design, and equipment placement.
  • Perform and document equipment functionality checks.
  • Participate in readiness walkthroughs, mock procedures, and equipment validation.
  • Help establish daily OR setup, turnover, and closing routines.


Instrument & Equipment Management

  • Inventory, label, and catalog all instruments, devices, and supplies.
  • Assist with assembling and organizing surgical instrument trays.
  • Coordinate vendor in-servicing and training for staff.
  • Establish sterilization, decontamination, and reprocessing workflows.
  • Organize supply and storage areas to support efficient OR operations.

Policy, Systems & Workflow Development

  • Assist in developing and refining OR policies and procedures.
  • Assist in sterile processing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)s, emergency protocols, and infection control workflows.
  • Support creation and maintenance of surgeon preference cards.
  • Help define supply par levels, case cart processes, and documentation systems.

Regulatory & Accreditation Preparation

  • Assist in preparing for state inspection, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) certification, and accreditation.
  • Ensure compliance with labeling, documentation, room setup, and infection control standards.
  • Support creation of pre-opening inspection and compliance checklists.

Team Coordination & Training

  • Work closely with OR leadership, anesthesia, surgeons, and admin staff.
  • Assist with onboarding and training new clinical staff.
  • *Participate in soft-opening workflows, simulation days, and first-case readiness.

POST- OPENING RESPONSIBILITIES ( PHASE 2)

  • Prepare the operating room and maintain the sterile field.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs before and during surgery.
  • Perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with circulating nurse.
  • Clean, sterilize, and reassemble instrument trays.
  • Restock rooms and maintain OR readiness at the end of each day.
  • Comply with all safety, infection control, and facility policies.

Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Licenses:

  • High school graduate.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.


Experience:
  • One (1) year of experience in perioperative, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), OR, procedural, ambulatory, or related surgical setting required.
Knowledge of:

  • State, federal and accrediting body regulations.
  • Standards related to ambulatory surgery center.
  • Surgical procedures and practices.
  • Perioperative nursing practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) experience preferred, but not required for strong candidates with relevant surgical or procedural experience in dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery, head and neck surgery, ENT/Otolaryngology, facial and cosmetic surgery
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and organizational information.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, leadership, and accountability.
  • Participates in education and professional development.
  • Supports proper chain of command and communication.

  • Physically able to stand, sit, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and maintain body positions for long periods of time.

  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or instruments.
  • Ability to hear, see and speak.
  • Ability to lift, transfer, move equipment and supplies up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be able to lift, turn, reposition, and transfer patients safely, with or without assistive devices.
  • Requires working under variable conditions and/or working irregular hours.
  • Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:

  • Work is performed in the private office setting and all clinical areas of the ASC.

  • OSHA Category I - high exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Some risk of injury from equipment or patient movement.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals; Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.
  • Continuous multi-tasking skills required.
  • Significant contact with staff/co-workers, students, residents, patients and their families, other employers, physicians, and their office staff, local hospital team members, and other members of the health care community.
  • Work schedule is dependent on department need. Minimal travel may be required.

Hiring Range $31.30 - $45.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
