Summary

As a Mechanical Engineer you will be responsible for bringing new custom products from initial conception to mass production whilst ensuring high levels of quality and on time delivery. As part of our new product development team, you will work with several project teams in the development, testing, and delivery of new products and the complex assembly and test fixtures used in the manufacture of these products.

In this position, you will have a solid grasp of high precision mechanical, electro-mechanical and/or opto-mechanical development best practices, along with a continued focus on learning and innovating. You will be self-starting and self-directing, with a strong desire to collaborate and to grow with others in the organization. You will have passion around both the exploratory nature of prototyping, as well as the rigor needed to incorporate appropriate DFM and DFT principles to finish and deliver a product to market.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Generate mechanical designs for precision mechanical assemblies, mechatronic systems and actuators from initial concepts to detailed design packages ready for transfer to production.
  • Create required design outputs to support Novanta's stage gate-oriented Product Development Process.
  • Work with product management and applications engineering to interpret customer requirements and create engineered solutions that generate new product revenue growth
  • Able to develop technical specifications and drawings for both platform and custom designs
  • Skilled in stack-up tolerance analysis to ensure mechanical fit, functional integrity and manufacturability across assemblies.
  • Collaborates with electrical engineers to perform PCB fit checks, mechanical interface validation, and enclosure integration analysis.
  • Provide pre-sale and post-sale product/technical support to strategic customers as needed
  • Perform hands-on assembly, testing, validation, associated data analysis and interpretation of new product designs, custom/derivative product designs, and assembly and test fixtures
  • Develops mechanical fixtures for electrical and embedded systems, supporting programming, test automation, and validation processes in collaboration with electrical engineers.
  • Ensure product compliance to all applicable standards and specifications. Familiarity with ISO9001 and ISO13485 is preferred.
  • Contribute to both product and process design
  • Work on cross-functional team to achieve cost effective transition from design to production including design/selection and implementation of tooling and processes.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently while being flexible enough to change priorities with short notice when necessary.

Required Experience, Education, Skills, Training and Competencies

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or similar disciplines.
  • 5+ years of experience in integrated product design, robotics or medical devices.
  • Knowledge of design, prototyping, assembling, documentation, and testing of mechanical and mechatronic assemblies.
  • Expert SolidWorks user
  • Experience with production processes such as injection molding and sheet metal forming, as well as prototyping techniques such as 3D printing and laser cutting.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and debugging skills across many domains.
  • Positive, can-do attitude, with strong engagement skills and ability to influence positive outcomes with a sense of urgency and personal commitment to market success, always tempered by a high moral and business code of conduct.
  • Proficient in GD&T
  • Demonstrated history of meeting or exceeding goals and getting results
  • Able to effectively project the "face of Novanta" to customers and suppliers
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Project).
