Schedule: Part-time, 20 hours per week
Shift times: Approximately 20 hours per week, primarily within Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm. Occasional weekend and evening hours required for events. Possibility of some additional hours up to 29 hours/week may be required. Internship expected to run 3 months from start date.
Location: Hybrid - remote with in-person requirements at 818 5th Ave, Suite 200, Des Moines, IA 50309 and for events in Des Moines, IA metro area.

Travel: Travel around Des Moines, IA metro area for events.

Job Summary:

Under immediate supervision of the Advocacy Manager, the Public Affairs Summer Intern will support the Public Affairs team in expanding capacity around a community education effort on maternal healthcare. This role will recruit and mobilize volunteers by collaborating on events in the community including planning, execution, participant recruitment, and data entry on behalf of Planned Parenthood North Central States and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa. Public Affairs Summer Interns are advocates in implementing our mission of "Advancing and protecting sexual and reproductive healthcare for all". They may perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Previous professional or volunteer experience in organizing for reproductive health/justice/freedom, or related coalition experience in LGTBQ+, immigration, or other similar civic engagement.
  • Experience in building relationships in the community and talking to people, or in diverse groups, over the phone or in-person, about reproductive freedom, or related area.
  • Availability during weekends and some nights to attend events and activities.
  • Passion for maternal healthcare and reproductive freedom.



Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

Works with the Advocacy Manager and Senior Advocacy Strategist to represent Planned Parenthood North Central States and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa by coordinating maternal health education efforts with the Public Affairs team, as well as in summer events and activities:



  • Collaborate in planning and executing maternal health care education events in coordination with the Public Affairs team, alongside state and local coalition and community partners.
  • Attend staff meetings and volunteer leaders' 1:1s to plan
  • Attend tabling events, phone banks, canvassing, or any event assigned or approved by supervisor.
  • Continuously perform accurate and up-to-date data entry using the project management tool, Voter Activation Network (VAN).
  • Recruits and mobilizes volunteers, including volunteer leadership and moving volunteers up the ladder of leadership and engagement.
  • Identify and support patient advocates and storytellers.
