Job Summary

We are seeking a responsible individual to perform the daily operations of Hawthorn Glen Outdoor Education Center and the Little Nature Museum.

Position Summary

  • Responsible for daily tasks of the Little Nature Museum, including the care of resident animals.
  • Perform as a liaison for permit groups.
  • Oversee and ensure general safety and security for Hawthorn Glen grounds.
  • Document and maintain animal care records.
  • Inventory materials for animal care in the Little Nature Museum.
  • Record and monitor attendance of daily visitors and participants.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Provide general cleaning and up-keep of the building.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Milwaukee Recreation and Hawthorn Glen rules, policies and procedures.
  • Perform appropriate opening and closing procedures for the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervision Required

Reports to the Animal Care Resource staff and Recreation Supervisor of Outdoor Conservation and Animal Care.

Job Requirements

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Experience

  • Previous work with children and adults.
  • Previous work with animals/wildlife is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of animal care.
  • Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Ability to hike on trails and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work well with limited supervision and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and respond to immediate needs of participants and emergency situations.
  • Ability to complete necessary paperwork.
  • Communication and collaboration skills.
  • Display a positive attitude and effectively communicate with participants and staff.
  • Willingness to work varied hours and days, including weeknights and weekends.
Working Environment

This work environment includes physical activity such as hiking, lifting at least 40 lbs., working in all weather conditions and cleaning, feeding and caring for animals.
