The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources ( LAR) is to provide NCSU faculty with optimal animal resources at the least practical cost. The term "animal resources" includes not only animal housing facilities, but also animal husbandry services, veterinary care, technical services, expertise in laboratory animal technology and medicine, and assurance of compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies for animal care and use. LAR assists faculty in conducting animal experimentation in accordance with these standards and is committed to ensuring the well-being of experimental animals while providing services that facilitate their humane and judicious use.

Essential Job Duties
As the LAR Supervisor, you are the bridge between groundbreaking research and world-class animal care. You will oversee a team of 15+ technicians and student workers, fostering a culture of excellence, safety, and unwavering compliance. Your leadership ensures that our researchers have the support they need to change the world.

The Impact You'll Make


  • Empower a Team: Recruit, mentor, and lead a team of 15+ full-time and part-time technicians, maintenance staff, and student workers. You aren't just a manager; you're a coach helping the next generation of veterinary professionals grow.

  • Champion Animal Welfare: Direct the daily husbandry and clinical care for a wide variety of species. You will be the primary advocate for species-specific needs and institutional standards.

  • Operational Management: From SOP development to project management, you will keep our facilities "audit-ready" at all times. You'll be the go-to expert for AAALAC, USDA, and IACUC compliance.

  • Strategic Collaborator: Act as a key liaison for faculty and research groups, ensuring their scientific objectives are met through seamless space management and husbandry support.

Physical & Environmental Requirements
  • To support our team and animals, the ability to perform essential physical tasks-including lifting up to 50 lbs and maintaining an active presence throughout the facility-is required.

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor's degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience overseeing animal husbandry and clinical care programs, ensuring adherence to species-specific standards and institutional requirements.
  • Proven knowledge of regulatory compliance standards, including AAALAC, USDA, and IACUC guidelines, and experience maintaining audit readiness.
  • Experience developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and managing operational or facility-related projects.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with experience coordinating with faculty, research teams, and staff while managing multiple priorities and adapting to changing needs.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid Driver's License: A current North Carolina Driver's License (or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire) is required to ensure seamless coordination across our various facility locations.

  • AALAS Certification (ALAT, LAT, or LATG) or equivalent experience within an AAALAC-accredited facility.
