Position Summary
The UNC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, is seeking a full-time Board Certified or Board Eligible Genetic Counselor to join our reproductive genetics team. This role provides comprehensive reproductive genetic counseling services within a collaborative group that includes 6 genetic counselors, 2 Maternal-Fetal Medicine/Geneticists, and 20 Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists. Clinical services are provided across several locations, including NC Women's Hospital, UNC MFM at Vilcom, UNC MFM at Duraleigh, and Moore Regional Hospital.

The position includes involvement with the UNC Center for Maternal and Infant Health and the UNC Fetal Care Center. Responsibilities include patient care as well as supervision and teaching of students, residents, fellows, and other learners. The Genetic Counselor will play an active role in patient care while also contributing to the education of medical students, residents, fellows, and genetic counseling students. Opportunities for research engagement and professional development are available. Hybrid work options are available depending on clinical needs.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's degree in genetic counseling from an ACGC-accredited program or an ABGC-recognized equivalent. Board certified or board eligible. New graduates are welcome to apply.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Clinical experience providing reproductive or prenatal genetic counseling in a high volume or academic medical center setting.
  • Comfort counseling on carrier screening, prenatal screening and diagnostic testing, fetal anomalies, and other complex reproductive genetic indications.
  • Familiarity with Epic or another electronic medical record system.
  • Experience supervising or teaching students, residents, fellows, or other learners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team
  • Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex genetic information clearly to patients and providers.
  • Ability to work independently while managing a busy clinical schedule across multiple sites.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate documentation and manage follow up efficiently.
  • Ability to work effectively within a fast paced, team based clinical environment
  • At least 1-2 years of clinical genetic counseling experience in prenatal, reproductive, or fetal care (though new graduates are still encouraged to apply).
  • Experience participating in multidisciplinary patient care activities, such as case discussions, fetal care evaluation, or high risk obstetric clinics.
  • Familiarity with ultrasound based anomaly evaluation or interdisciplinary fetal diagnosis workflows.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
The ability to communicate professionally and compassionately when adverse diagnoses or events must be relayed to and discussed with prospective parents.
